I have ATF in my power steering system and would like to change it to the correct trans/hyd fluid. Tractor is '79 30B w/ AD3.152 Perkins. Searching the archives leads me to believe the resevoir holds a filter. I would like to change the filter.Do I need to remove the unit to change the filter? If so - how is that done? What is the best way to purge the system of the red stuff?
Thanks for your help, Scottyb

You are correct in that the pump has an internal filter that s/b serviced regularly. I have a MF 30E/1985 Backhoe. Bought the replacement pump off web site to right (Yesterday's Tractors) Came from Packistan. $250.00 vs $350.00 at optional Web sites. After bleeding system-got P/S again. Tractor had 3300 Plus hours. To change filter or pump, first crack/remove 2 hydraulic lines at the pump. As I found out, break loose the fittings at the base of pump before removal so you can transfer/install on the new pump if so desired. Locate 2 bolts that secure pump to engine block-remove same and tap pump. Remember, either way you need a new gasget at the pump/block. (Didn't get one with new pump-made own) It should come loose. Replace filter-remove 6 screws and replace filter-reverse process OR replace pump w/new gasget. Either way, when bleeding system, use Permatram and top up to filler hole-check several times. Steer hard to right. You will hear air purged as you bleed the system. Top up again and you should have P/S again. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply, Rich. So, Do I have to remove the pump from the engine block, as you said, just to change the filter? When the lines are disconnected at the pump, will they drain all of the old fluid out of the system? Thanks for your help, Scottyb
