MF35 Front Axle Help....Question

I am trying to restore my Massey Ferguson MF35 Tractor. I removed the front tires today and was inspecting the front axle. Found that were the Radius Rod Connects to the front axle extension that there is just a pin on each side connecting the two. Looking at my I&T manual which is not very clear, but I think that it shows a bolt with a nut and washer connecting them. Can any one give me any insight to this? Any information about the front axle and all will be great a help! Thanks Very Much!
Keith

Hello Keith,
Yes, there is a bolt at the front of each radius rod. They are prone to breaking. When this happens it will allow the axle to twist slightly and alter the geometry. The upshot is that on a non PAS tractor the steering will become heavier and you will get more tyre wear. There is only one bush fitted to the centre section and it is advisable to keep this greased. At the rear of the radius rods you will find ball ends. These wear in the sockets and can cause the axle assembly to be loose. It is quite easy to make some shims from copper sheet to cure this.
Make sure that the thrust bearings at the bottom of the kingpins are in good condidion. If you have any gap under the top steering arms then that suggests wear in the bearings and is worth investigating at the least. Keep the system greased and the tracking set correctly. Ideally the toe-in (wheels closer in front) should be about 1/8 inch. Problems on older tractors will occur when you have wear in the rocker shafts in the steering box and you will not be able to get an accurate figure.
Cheers

Thanks David for the information! I guess the bolts broke some time ago, and no one knew the difference. With the information you provided I feel that I can move forward now. Is there a better manual that is more detailed and the I&T that I have?
Thanks,
Keith

Hello Keith,
I do not think that there is a great choice between the I&T and the genuine manual. There are some advertised on e-bay but I know nothing of their content.
Generally the I&T will suffice for straightforward repairs and of course we are always here for any other problems.
