i have a chance to buy an 1130 that does not hold in park. i really dont know much about Massey's. is this a good tractor? do they have weak points? i would use it to pull a round baler and 14 ft windrower. is the perkins engine pretty good? last time i worked on a perkins was in college and it was on a payloader and was a real pain in the rear to get parts for.
thanks
Gary

I have a Massey 1130 too. Use it to pull a 12 foot bushhog, does a great job with it. Mine does not have park either...prior owner had put on a microbrake (parkbrake), but I have been having problems with it not releasing, so quit using it. Other than no park, has done fine for me. My father borrowed one summer to run his round baler a couple year ago when his jd4020 was down and it did fine.

We have two of the 1130's they have been nothing but good to us. The 354 is very fuel efficient. We have replaced the turbos on both tractors but one every 6 to 10 years I don't think is bad. They will start on the first lick usually. If it wasn't for the age I would have another one.

I speak from alot of experience on this one. Had one for more than 20 years.
The factory turbo is a problem. They blow the seals which dumps oil into the exhaust. We bought 2 new from Massey and had 1 rebuilt. The local diesel repair guys stated there was a better aftermarket bolt on replacement, but only after the last one was replaced.
Problem 2 is the hydro pump under the seat. They last between 5 and 10 years. Regular cleaning of the screen in the rear end doesn't prolong the life at all. The radial pump on the front of the engine needs special tools to remove and the flat disks inside tend to fall out inside the pump. A few poor designs made this a flawed unit. Ours was always cooled off before shut down and the 354 sounded good with alot of torque. Was happy to sell it for 3500 bucks running just to get out from under it before something else gave out.

Wow! Both my my 1100 and 1130 have the original charge pump. Never had a problem there. Rebuilt both radial pumps. And what tools do you need to get the radial pump out? I can remove, rebuild and reinstall in less then six hours. Only thing you need is a small chain hoist, cherry picker or similar. By the way my 1100 has over 10,000 hours and the 1130 has around 8,000 hours, I put 400-500 on each a year. Next time you wanna give away a 1000 series Massey you give me a shout.

Tech manual shows a long handle tool to wrap around the housing of the radial pump. It turns the pump and says do not drop.

Yeah I know about the tech manual. Just drain coolant and engine oil cooler, remove sheet metal, remove fan, remove radiator, lift out pump.

The 1130 is a great tractor, just as good as any other brand this size and vintage. The Perkins engine is a good engine, good on fuel for it's size. I own an 1100 and an 1130 and have never had trouble getting engine parts or any other part. Most of the weak points show up from poor maintenance. the hydraulic system will tend to give fits. If you don't change the filter every 500 hours and the Hy/tran oil every 1000. that park being out is a pretty easy fix so I wouldn't worry about it.

It is a good tractor.

Major pro: Perkins 354.
