Hello-

I am in the process changing the gear case oil on a Massey 101 Jr I recently bought. There are two drain plugs - one on the rear bottom of the tractor (in vertical line with the PTO shaft) and one on the belly directly under the transmission shifter. Are there two separate oil reservoirs - do I need to fill the trans and the rear diff? There seems to only be one oil level plug on the side, maybe 6 inches up from the bottom.

Also, does anyone have the capacities handy? I drained more than 10 gallons of oil/water sludge out of this tractor! I am assuming it was terribly overfilled. 80W/90 will work to refill?

Thanks,

Matt

You have 2 sumps, but only one fill as they self level by the side plug.I have misplaced my op.man.but it should be 8-10 gal.to refill and if you are going to use it very much use 80-140 lube. They called for 140 in the summer and 80 in the winter. The 30s held 13 gal.

As I mentioned below, the operators manual says 6 US gallons. Maybe you missed my post, just thought I'd correct that volume you posted.

They are continuous with one another. The original owners manual says 6 US gallons (or 5 imperial gallons) of gear lube or whatever you are using. It says to fill through the filler plug at the front end of the transmission housing on top, just ahead of the gearshift lever. I would think that 80W90 would be fine although I think originally they used heavier stuff but it's difficult to find these days and quite a bit more money. I usually buy the pails at Wally World to keep costs down and I'm sure it meets and exceeds the original specs anyways. There is one oil level plug (that you mentioned) on the right rear corner of the tranny/differential housing. I would drain both chambers and then add the 6 gallons and then drive it a bit. You could then take out the level check plug and see what happens but if there were a bit too much, I'm sure it'd be OK.

Thanks very much for the replys. In all, I drained 13 gals of watery sludge from this tractor! I guess she must have spent most of her life outside.

I got some fresh 80W-90 today and filled her up. Just about six gallons before it reached the side level plug. I will drive it around tomorrow and recheck the levels.

Thanks again for the help.

Matt
