I have a MF40 industrial with torque converter split at the moment to replace torque converter seal. The rear main leaks a little and wonder if this can be replaced without dropping the sump. Engine is a 3cyl Perkins (AD3-152). How to know if it is a rope type or neoprene seal? without pulling apart. Any help much appreciated, thanks

Hi, the rope seal has the seal housing in two seperate halves bolted together.
The lip seal is one housing looks a bit like a port-hole on a ship.
You do not need to drop the sump to replace the seal but remember that it is possible that your leak may come from the rear cork joint on the sump as well.

Thanks DavidP, so just confirming - if I remove the torque converter and flywheel can I then replace either type of seal? Also with regard to my torque converter leak - I can see some slight damage to the front lip of the torque converter to pump seal but want to make sure that I do fix the problem before reassembly! I have yet to thoroughly check the copper pipe line to pressure gauge, but I will. Does a little damage to the seal sound like a probable cause? or is there anything else to look for?
