I have a MF 40B with the Perkins engine. There is a oil pressure switch mounted on the bottom of the oil pressure guage that closes a contact when the engine oil pressure gets above a certain point. This allows power to flow to excite the alternator and supplies power to the insturments. On mine there is a diode in the wire to the alternator from the pressure switch. The diode in in the wiring harness to the alternator. Mine was bad and would not charge. I replaced it with one from Radio Shack (3 amp) and haven't had any problems . The diode has to be installed with voltage flow in the right direction or it won't work. Hope this helps DH

After looking at my service manual, it says that there could be either a diode or 10 ohm resistence wire in that circuit. You may have either one. The 40B and your tractor was built in the same time frame. DH

Me again. Book says with engine running place jumper wire ( MONENTARY) between Bat. terminal and terminal #1 on alternator. If it starts charging the problem is either diode or resistence wire.

Hi,
First of all remove the small wire from the alternator and earth it with the 'ignition' switched on. Your warning light should come on.
If this works then the circuit to energise the alternator is working.

All 285's over here are deisels, so the key only has the start position and then goes back to off-

No way to just turn the ignition switch on, there is no ignition. Just a start key, and pull the fuel shutoff to shut 'er down.

Are any of the guages working? There is an oil pressure activated switch that excites the alternator. This could be shot or a loose wire. I'm not sure where it's located though.

I think if the fuse is blown for the instrument panel it may also have the same problem.
