Need to change the oil in my 1956 MH-50, 4 cylinder gasoline. What weight should I be using? Don't ever use it in the winter if that matters. Thanks for any advice.

Mark

Yes, 15w40 for looser engines.
10w30 if it's tight.

i am not a big fan of 10w30 in a tractor for summer use. it just doesn't stay thick enough when the engine is up to temp. the clearances in your tractor are NOT the same in the car you drive. 15w40 or 15w50 oil is much better suited for these old girls. bearing clearances open up and oil thins out when it is hot.

usually 10w30 oil at 100C(operating temp)has a viscosity of around 11 - 12 cp. almost like water, huh? 10w40 is around 14.5 - 15 cp. almost 25% more pumping pressure with the 10w40. now, 15w40 rotella t is 15.7 and a 15w50 is around 18 cp. thicker oil gives better oil pressure which saves the engine.

Thanks Arthur. I appreciate the advice and the comparisons of the various weights. Take care.

I use diesel engine oil. If the engine is somewhat worn and tired, a 15w40 is good, if in good condition, a 10w30 is good.
I like diesel oil because it has better additives for heavy duty use.
I use 10w30 because the manual recommends 30 wt as the heaviest to use in hot weather and a 10 for cold weather back in the days of single grades.
So it sounds like 10w30 in todays world.
