I sold a tractor to a friend. A good friend! this was a couple of months ago. Everything was fine untill last week. The PTO and lift arms just quit working and or turn and lift slow or real slow if at all. Roger took the mower off and the arms lifted and the pto worked without the moweron it. He said he sees some air bubbles in the oil. He has changed the oil and is also wondering what is the correct oil in this case. I want to help him as he is a friend and that is a nice little tractor, clean and straight. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Ron

I am having the same problem with my 65. I went out tonight to mow and had some difficulty getting the PTO in gear.I tried the live PTO and all I got was gear grinding! It would go into the ground speed with no problem! After mowing using this condition, I stopped and tried to shift into live PTO and it went into gear! I mowed for a little while and the hydrolics could not keep the front of the brush hog up high enough. It was dragging the gound and pulling the tractor rpnm down. I was thinking that the pump was bleeding off. This could be a combination of problems, Thanks JJ

Hi,
The first step would be to check the operation and adjustment of the clutch unit. Remove the belly plate and check the inside with a flashlight.
Firstly check for presence of oil. Around the outside of the clutch unit you will see 3 adjusting bolts. There should be a gap between the head and PTO pressure plate of a minimum of one hand hacksaw blade as an example and maximum of two. If You have this gap then it is possible that the belleville (dished) spring which provides the pressure for the PTO plate has broken. Does the second stage operation of the clutch pedal feel weaker that it was before?

Aaron, is there a lock out or something that could be doing this?

The Pto clutch is suspect here. The pto clutch drives a shaft that drives the pump. It runs anytime the clutch is halfway out. The pump shaft drives the PTO shaft. There is a gear selector on the backside of the pump that selects no pto, ground pto (by iterfacing the drivetrain) and live (when clutch is halfway out). If the pump and pto shaft are both experiencing problems, then the problem is likely common to both (ie the clutch). HTH Aaron
