i just got an mf50, supposedly the motor was recently overhauked (within last 100 hrs). my question is, are the engines usually noisy or is it possibly a problem. it doesnt sound like a diesel but it isnt as quiet as my 9n either. i know the difference between lifter noise and bottom end noise and it has both. this is my 1st massey and i am still learning about them,
thanks
eddie

well i got it figured out. the rear main was installed up side down. dont know how long it was run this way, i've run it abt 20 min total.got it replaced and the #4 rod, which was toast. oil press is off the guage cold and and 35 hot.engine is a lot less noisy but still a little mre than i am used to from a gas motor. oh well i am going to run it till it quits. oh yeah, all the other bearings are in fine shape.

Our MH50 Z134 has valve lash noise, I ought to adjust the valves one of these days.

I suggest that you check to see that there's plenty of oil getting up in the valve cover. The top of the engine is lubed off the #3 main. It's possible to put that set of bearing halves in upside down, and then you have a dry rocker arm shaft, which in a short time will trash the exhaust rockers. This will lose power and do other interesting things.

The fix is, should that be the case, is to replace the trashed parts, replace the offending main bearing, polish the crank if necessary, and off you go.

If you have oil up there, no sweat, like others said, maybe it's just a loose engine.

You could take a yardstick and put your ear against one end and the other various places around the engine when its running to get a little better fix on things.

I owned one of these MH-50's with a Contintal Z-134 engine for many years and noticed the same thing. I had several experenced repairmen listen to it and it was decided it was either piston slap or possiably the cam shaft which dose not have replaceable bearings, in either event it was decided that there is no harm done in giving it a normal days work.

I have a MF50 w/Continental Z134 gas. I am in the process of overhauling it and it was WELL worn. It had no excess noise; in fact, the only noisy thing about it at high rpm was the fan noise. Oil pressure on mine was 40 lbs. hot at working rpm, about 20-25 lbs. at idle. Mine was anything but a noisy engine.

What si the oil pressure hot? I would check that right away. If OK hot, then you probably don't have a bearing problem. The valve lash can be adjusted.
