Hi - I am loking for help with a used older MF tractor - it seems when the transmission is hot, it wont engage. I wonder if it needs transmission fluid. I searched the thing, and dont see a "fill pipe for transmission fluid. I have filled up the HYD fluid, and the engine oil, which is fine. My question is ... Does the TRanny use the HDY fluid or is there a separate fluid system for it? If so, how does one check the Tranny fluid and then fill it? Also - is the symptom typical of low fluid levels? Or could this be a bigger problem? Thanks!

I have an 30B with hydraulic shuttle shift. What is the correct oil for the transmission? I looked in the manual- it showed me how to rebuild the transmission, but didn't tell me what kinda oil to put in it. Maybe I'm blind...probably am. I'ld like to change the fluid, is there any parts needed? Would appreciate help.

HI Stephen The MF40 transmission hydraulic and differential are all one big reservoir and all fill through the fill plug hole just left of the shift levers and check with the dipstick in the access plate on the right side of the rear center housing. Some of the older tractor did have a a plug down on the right side of the transmission but the two compartment cases was done a way with long before the MF40 came out. I doubt very much if low fluid is causing the problem you are having. It is probably the clutch pack and or shaft seals or the transmission pump causing your problem The first thing you need to do is check the pressure there is a plug on top of the bellhousing for a gauge to be connected to do that. I have a picture on where the gauge connects and information on checking the pressure. That will help with what is causing the problem. Email me if I can be of further help

Thanks BIG DEAN! I will go check the tractor today and will look at it with a new eye. I will need a manual for maintaing my MF... do you reccommend a certain one? BTW - the Seria #l for my MF 40 is 9A145708 which may indicate that it is a mif to late 70's model. I had a discussion a few weeks back with a gentleman who informed me that even though the tractor may have the letters MF40 on the outside (painted in black on the arm of the loader) that it may not be an MF40. I have seen pics of other MF 40's and they look the same, so I will assume for now it is. BTW - there is no clutch, the forward and reverse is just a three pedal lever on the right. Quite interesting system.
