FE 35 Temp Guage - can it be repaired?

I have an 1962 FE 35. Last summer I put on a new rad and an after market temp guage. Used it all last summer and this spring to bush hog - no problem. Last week it overheated and blew out antifreeze - it appeared to be around the rad cap. I let it cool, refilled the rad, and now it seems to be running OK - perhaps the rad cap was not on properly or it was stuck so I replaced it. Since the overheating the temp guage has been reading "off the dial" - it never did return to normal. Is there someway to repair this or do I need a new temp guage. Any recommendation on after market ot auto temp guages that would work?

Thanks.
Bob

Check the front of the radiator. look behind the grill. I overheated mine discing last year. Dust had collected thick enough on the front of it to make it overheat. WASHED IT OFF AND WAS GOOD TO GO - AFTER A NEW THERMOSTATE, of course. And in your case - a new gauge. I'm using a SUN gauge from Napa. Hope this helps.

You probably have a capillary gauge temperature sensor and they are not repairable. Does it stay in the hot position when the engine is cold? If it does than the gauge is probably damaged and you'll need to replace the unit. They are about $20.
If it doesn't, and indicates overheating when you are operating, you need to find out the cause of the problem; bad thermostat, improperly installed thermostat, wrong pressure rating or leaking rad cap, collapsed lower rad hose, slipping water pump drive belt, etc. Make sure the air side of the radiator is free of dirt and chaff. You need to make sure that you are not overheating because these Continental blocks don' handle overheating very well. They crack between the cylinders.

Bob:

If your radiator is not clogged with debris the overheating was probably the result of a stuck thermostat. If so, it will probably happen again.

Thanks Dean
The thermostat is a fairly straightforward fix.

I also should have said earlier there is no sign of bubbles or oil in the rad fluid - a good thing I believe.

I am still looking for ideas about fixing or replacing the temp guage.

First check your rad. It may be full of weed seeds and fluff, causing the engine to overheat. I killed a TEA20's engine bush hogging at this time of year because of junk in the rad.

My 35 doesn't even have a temp gauge.

Yep, rad is clear - I blew it out a couple of times already this year.

Thanks.
