I have a 35 massey ferguson diesel deluxe. my question is,what size bush hog would be the best fit for my tractor? the ground i will be using it on is fairly flat with no hills. and it is not rough or rocky. 5ft or 6ft, light duty or medium duty. don"t know what to buy. any suggestions would be helpful.

I asked my dealer for a six foot he said whats it going on? I said a Massey 135 he said get a five foot and I'm glad I did.I can make that little 3cyl. Perkins deisel snort and going slow in heavy is a must.I cut short. My neighbour has a five foot on his nine N but he has it set highest and just clips pasture thats too easy.

I would err to the side of caution. It would be much better to have a cutter that your tractor can handle easily as opposed to one that taxes the engine, brakes, and hydraulics everytime out. My dad bought a 6 footer to go on our 135, but the terrain and the massive weight of the thing left it parked while the 5 footer he was forced to buy was used. He lost a lot of money on the 6 footer. A 6 footer works well on my brothers 50 but there is no terrain to worry about. It does tax the hydraulics to the limit, though. Just my $0.02. Aaron

Roger,
I have the 35 with the Standard diesel. I have a 5 ft KingKutter that I used on my TO30 and the 35 doesn"t even breathe hard. Steering isn"t affected when I lift it and there"s no doubt in my mind that a 6 footer would work well. Probably better since there would be a slight overlap to the tires and you could get closer to fences and whatnot.

Your MF 35 should handle a 6 ft mower from the horsepower stand point and even a 7 foot if you are just mowing medium height grass. The weight is another issue however. I don't know what your three point hitch capability is but that is one limit and then the ammont of weight you can lift without affecting the steering and handling is another. If you go to heavy, you may need ballast on the front to preclude the latter. I have a TO-30 and my mower weighs ~750 lbs and I need some ballast for the front end.

Roger:

I've worked two 35s with Perkins diesel engines. I have no experience with the Standard Motors diesel.

If your Perkins engine is decent it will play with a 5 footer.

I used a 6 footer on mine and both did a good job with it even in heavy grass.

I've also used the same mower on my VERY good Ford 860. The 35s would handle the 6 footer nearly as well and use much less fuel doing it.

I would not get a HD or even medium duty 6 footer as it will probably be too heavy making your tractor too light in the front. My 6 footer weighs about 800 lbs, and that is enough for a 35 without front wheel weights.

Hi Roger From my experience with my F40 Ferguson you can use a 6ft with no problems. I have a 6ft Woods 72 Dixie Cutter that i run behind the F40 and have for 7 yrs now. I mow over grown fields mostly and it handles it just fine. But like the previous post said you dont have to take the whole swath if it gets to heavy. Good Luck Lester

Roger, you could probably use a 6 ft.most of the time. If the grass got too tall or weedy you wouldnt have to take a full cut.
