I got the rear PTO seal and made a seal for the pickup tube. I used a pump to get out the remaining oil from the chambers. Then I used a magnet to look for pieces of metal. I found the big piece that was knocked off and a bunch of fine shavings. Must have probed that thing 50 times getting nothing the last 25.

So I dumped in the oil and dropped the cover back on. All about the PTO was good but I didn't have hydraulics. So for the 5th time, I pulled the cover off to study the hydraulics. Laying on the bench, it appeared that the lower spool was stuck "in" and didn't move when the controls were moved. I pulled apart the spring that runs from the pickup to some linkage near the top of the cover. Then I could get a punch inside the cover. I tapped on the punch a couple of times and the spool popped out. By hand I worked it back and forth until it felt completely free. The top spool was moving with the controls so I put the cover back on.

Upon starting the tractor, I had a long time to get the air purged. After a couple of minutes, the control worked fine in the position control (all I care about).

So this morning, I hooked onto a 5 foot shredder and did some mowing. Not real heavy but some was in the 3 foot range. The 25 handled this job in 5th geat with ease. After lunchtime, I hooked the 25 up to a 6' shredder. It had some difficulty picking the 6' shredder up but it did do it after a bit. I went to a different pasture where the grass and weeds were even higher and again pushed it in 5th gear. The 25 had to grunt a few times but it did the job.

When I took the 6' back, the hydraulics wouldn't lift the shredder unless the engine ran at the recommended PTO speed and then, it lifted very slowly. Sometimes it appeared to lift better if the PTO was running - but I know that makes no sense.

Do you think that I still have an air problem (bleeding)? Is there a way to tell what the pressure is at the pump outlet?

After the workout, the front and rear main seals seem to leak less - took a cup of oil in the 3 hours of work.

Could use an oil filter number as well.

Thanks for your help. I think I'm in the happy ending zone!

Congratulations on getting the beast to perform ! You asked for oil filter numbers, just done all the filters on my 825, the AGCO numbers I have for : hydraulic filter - 969237M1 : engine oil filter -1883258M92 : fuel filter 3405418M2 : hope these are some use. Out of interest, I've put a pic. and some details on the photo's file. Good Luck !

Very sorry. You must have a lot more gears than I thought! Was going under impression that mf25 was similar and smaller than mf35. I have a fe35 3cyl Perkins and it has an 8 spd (6 forward). If I was in 5th, I would amost be in road gear. I just mowed some heavy 3ft+ grass yesterday with a 6ft BH Sqweeler and 2nd gear was best overall choice not only for capacity but also for ground speed. Did not intend to offend.

Rick, the 25 has 8 forward speeds - 4 speed transmission with a high and low range. 4th is about 3.5 mph which wouldn't strain the tractor - I wanted it to work and get warmed up well. 5th is about 5 mph which is a little too fast. Now that I got it back in the groove after years of sitting around, I'll need to drop back to 4th because the shredders don't work well (cut evenly and cleanly) going 5 mph.

Oddly, the first 5 gears have speeds like their numbers. 1st is a little over 1, 2nd is a little under 2, 3rd is a little under 3, 4th is a little under 4 and 5th is a little over 5 mph. High/Low is about 4 to 1 ratio.

I can see the grin of success:)
sounds like your onto things, the spools will stick once and awhile as it is an older tractor, and they do wear.
One trick is to when it sticks[ no hyd operations] is to remove the plug just below your draft control setting, right side of the tranny housing. Use something like a dental pick[ clean and strong] to gently reach in and move the stuck spool in to loosness again. if it's that particular one thats stuck, sometimes it saves surgery.
If you ever take apart the linkage running the spools, take a photo and notes, its a pain to re-align and time, very simple setup but needs to be exact in its setup.
Walk away and have a soda for an hour helps at times:)
I hate to say it but i tried a 6 ft unit and the 5ft is much better on that size machine, maybe a bit fast, but with sharp blades and good ground it is possible. i used mostly 4th low range on mine, 3rd low when rocky/rough.
You could burn a pto/main clutch if the mower clutch is stuck or not slipping, or where the pto gear/shaft condition is known, maybe watch for overloading[ blackish smoke/lugging]
I did strip the spline coupling once on the pto input shaft, available from a driveline repair shop.
I will look for the oil filter number after the parades and stuff are over.
As for not picking up, what is the oil temp like[ tranny casing warmish?] maybe main cylinder seal is worn also, and with hot oil is bypassing?
Orginal seal is not available but bearing shops have a replacment for the leather style to a modern style, should have that number here somewhere also.
Happy mowing.

I agree with the 5'. I wanted to work the engine pretty good and it sure runs better now. From now on, I'll be in 4th low range as the mower does a better job at that speed.

Thanks for the temp suggestion.

Man, 6ft "hog" in over waist high grass an in 5th gear! You will be lucky if the clutches haven't burned to the nib! If that field wasn't as smooth as a runway, you must have been bounceing around like a bronco buster on a wild horse?

How many gears do you think a 25 has? I was going about 5 miles an hour. I generally bush hog at about 4 to 4.5 mph with my other tractors. I went a little faster here to make the engine work - since it didn't work very hard on the 5' shredder. This tractor had been sitting a while and I needed to get the engine warmed up to be sure the rings were loose. It is a diesel and did smoke some when I started. After the work, the smoke had almost gone away. Water temperature just reached the low end of normal.

I guess I am offended by your remarks. Do you burn out the clutches when you run a shredder at 5 mph? Do you bounce around like a bronco on a wild horse at 5 mph?
