OK, I have the engine together and bolted to the tractor. I unwrapped the head (from the shop) and bolted it to the engine. I went to install the little valve stem caps and no holes in the exhaust valve stems to accept the caps. I installed the stem caps on the intake valve stems and bolted the rocker arms in place. Then checked clearence and only had to adjust a very slight amount. I did notice that the exhaust valve stems are longer than the old ones.

Questions: Are the exhaust valve stem caps no longer used? Also, I had to use a crows foot socket and an extention to torque the short head bolts above the spark plugs. Will this change the torque specs?

Looks like I will have to remove the rocker arms after the engine comes to life to retorque the head bolts.

I am making progress and it is nice to be heading back together.

Thanks, Tom

Regarding your question on the crow foot wrench affecting the torque, the answer is yes. Generallythe crowfoot extends the moment arm so the applied torque is grater than the indicated torque by the ratio of the length of the torque wrench to length of the torque wrwnch plus the incremental length of the crowfoot. So , for example if the length of the torque wrench is 12 inches and the distance btween the centerline of the torque wrench drive to the ccenterline of the bolt head in the crow foot is 1.2 inches, then when you torque to 12/(12 + 1.2)=12/13.2=0.909 of the desired value, you'll apply the correct torque. If the required torque is 75 lb-ft, then torque to 68.2 lb ft. This assumes that the torque wrench and the crowfoot are in a straight line. (----o-c)
Hope this helps you.

Jerry, thanks for the reply. Sounds like a junior high lever problem. Ya know, if Jonny sits 4 feet from the center of the teeter tottor and he is 55 pounds, where must Jenny sit if she is a 45 pounder?
