Looking at a 590

I am looking at a very used 590. Here is the info I have. Cab is cut off. Theres is a lot of rust on the floor board. The engine starts easily and seems to run smooth but does have a little smoke. Transmission shifts easy. I drove it in different gears in high and low and did not hear any noise. Steering had about a quarter turn of play in it and turned smooth and easy. Brakes were very touchy, they would lock up at the slightest touch. Hitch raised with a shutter at both slow and fast idle. Lift control had to be pushed way down to get the lift to move down. PTO engaged but kept turning when disengaged. The hours showed a little of 4000 but the tach did not work. It does have rear hydraulics but no idea on their working condition. I looked at the engine oil and the rearend/trans fluid, they both looked clean, but I was told they had been changed recently. I am looking for a tractor to use for mowing a 15 acre pasture and light brush cutting. Possibly for mowing and baling hay in the future. Any thing in particular I should watch for or I could check for. FYI I am in Alabama.
Thanks,
Davis

Hello DavisD in Alabama,
I believe that this is the first mention I have heard of a 500 series MF making its way to the States. Perhaps other readers could post replies on other 500 models in North America.
From what you say the cab has been cut off and just left the floorboard. UK 500's were very prone to rust particularly in the floor as they never had an opportunity to dry out. You mention that it is 'well used'. That in itself is enough to suggest that there are plenty of problems lurking. The 248 engine is very reliable and will give a good life with a bit of TLC now and again. You don't mention whether it is a Multi-Power.
You will probably find that much of the steering play is happening where the main shaft goes down through the front axle casting. Look for wear in the steering box (normally adjustable), worn ball joints and worn linkage between the steering ram and main shaft. Have an assistant turn the steering wheel while you check. If the hydraulics rise with a shudder? there could be pump or filter problems. The PTO not stopping is usually down to failure of the brake pad mechanism. If the tach isn't working you have to assume that it has done a lot more work than shown. The 590 would be an ideal tractor for what you have in mind. You have covered most of the areas of trouble. Check how close the left hand brake rod is to the fuel tank when the brakes are applied (assuming the fuel tank is under the left side of the cab. Check to see if the rod has been hacksawed to shorten it. If it has then the brakes are just about worn our.
All in all this would have to be a very very cheap tractor and you would have to be prepared to spend a lot of money on it.
To rectify the hydraulic and PTO problem will mean having to split the tractor between the gearbox and rear centre housing to remove the pump/PTO assembly.

As for your question about the 500 series in the States. I've seen a few at auctions mostly the larger ones. I would have to believe that they trickled down from Canada. Just like I've seen Euro John Deere's as well with those silly OPU's
