I pulled the PTO shaft and tried again to straighten the shaft. After I thought I had it, I reinstalled and discovered that the end under the ground speed gear was bent. I had been indicating off the in-board bearing. So, I used the gear as an indicator (actually was a pretty good indicator) and did a bend, reinstalled, took it out and did a bend - went through 4 cycles. I got it straight enough to get the slider to work. I can now engage and dis-engage as designed. The PTO (when dis-engaged) spins very easily. The two gears for ground speed are damaged but seem to work fine without load - they are constantly in mesh. They don't make any noise. I made a new stop for the engagement lever so it holds in neutral and cannot be put in ground speed - don't want to risk it in ground speed. I'll take some magnets along next weekend to see if I can find those portions of the ground speed teeth that were damaged. I've got the PTO seal on order and will visit the dealer for the dip tube seal and the large gasket. I think I am in good shape now.

On another note, I'd like to check valve clearance as the engine runs a lot better at higher RPM - sounds like tight valves. Looks like a huge job to do - lots of stuff to disassemble before pulling the valve cover. With this tractor, there doesn't appear to be a way to check the valves while it is running so cold check will have to suffice.

Thanks, Phil, for your help, guidance and encouragement.

Hi Tex
Good luck with the 25. I have a 130 which is very similar and those parts sure are hard to find. Have you found a source. I especially need tie rod ends, a steering wheel, and some sheet metal. It is a strong little tractor.

Patrick: In reference to your tie rod ends, i found that the 48 to 52 ford truck[f47 series] ones fit my unit. The ends are available from NAPA, or a suppliers of antique parts such as joblot automotive in New York, or Dennis Carpewnter in N. Carolina, check out an auto flea market somewhere?
I suspect the cars units are the same but i had truck parts and numbers at the time.
regards

Found some manuals but no parts. So far, I've found seals from Chicago Rubber (through Napa) and my Massey Ferguson dealer says he can provide gaskets. Don't need any parts, yet. Hope that I don't. Haven't yet checked out the hydraulics.

Hi, Jim. You've probably seen the Massey Ferguson 35. The 25 looks like the 35 but it is smaller in nearly all dimensions. The 35 has a 3 cylinder Perkins engine. The 25 has a 4 cylinder Perkins engine. The 35 has about 38 horsepower while the 25 has 25. The 35 weighs 3560 and the 25 weighs 3000. They made about 50,000 35 tractors and about 500 25 tractors. It is very comparable to an 8N Ford in size but it has independent PTO and the ability to lock the rear wheels together in tough going. I bought it because I'd never had a Massey Ferguson. Could have purchased any Massey Ferguson but this one intrigued me - it was built in France and imported. The same tractor sold in Europe had a different number. I called my local Massey Ferguson dealer for parts on Saturday. The parts man had never heard of the tractor and did not have any information on it!

hi there, didn't forget you, but was a few days late getting off the ship, this afternoon i will look a the books and send oil info i find.
good you got the shaft back in service, and now you know what happened as the missing teeth indicate. unless you have a use for ground speed locking it out might be the way to go, until you review the situation as being fit for use, depends on what you are using for equipment actually now and years to come.
on the valves, run it till operating temp is reached then remove the tank and valve cover to get access to the adjusters set them all to .010inch. BUT a note in the good book says when setting the valves on a cold engine[ tank/cover removed] set them all to .012inch
not running as you had fiquered out alrady.
info note: the engine oil filter replacement is a FRAM CH813PL saves a few bucks:)
OK found the oil info also i used 20 liter pail[ 5 gallons] of Quaker State 10w30, detergent[ regular engine oil] dealer confirmed this also, after "correcting" me on the wally brand stuff.
Did you get your manual yet? or need info on the sequence of valve timing/setting?
What about the oil leak at the center section? any plans to seperate and repair that also, if it is the shaft seal maybe just the cooler lines?
have fun.

Thanks for the oil filter info. 10W30 agrees with the IT manual as well. The Massey Operators Manual says 30W but of course, no multi weight oils existed when the manual was originally written. I've got the operators manual and the IT manual. I'm thinking of getting a parts book but those puppies cost about $60 delivered - may wait on it a bit.

What do you mean by sequence of valve timing/setting? I figured to set the rockers at the spec but don't plan to adjust anything on the injection pump. I may pull the injectors at some time in the future and check compression.

I don't think there is an oil leak any where. I will check the cooling lines.

Thanks again,

sounds like progress is being made, by sequence i meant which cylinder to do when the piston it TDC. not the fuel pump. but since you have the tank off anyway, and if questioning yourself about the operation of the injectors, good time to have them tested/cleaned.
i thought you had said there was an oil leak under the engine/tranny section eariler, hopefully its good to go now.
have fun.
Another source of info is the libary, look for a "clymers" yard tractor manual, one of them covers the 25 and 130, seems it was in the right class of hp to be included.
