Starter was rebuilt several years ago and has worked great but a few days ago when I tried to start it, the battery terminals were sparking and the tractor would not start. The starter started to smoke. We removed it and took it to the repair shop. The shop said we had done a good job on it and it had to be rebuilt. I can't figure out what caused this. The voltage regulator? Any ideas?

So when we disconnected the battery terminal during the problem and tried to re-connect it, there were sparks at that terminal before cranking the engine. Would this mean a short in the starter?

with low voltage you starter selionid will weld the contacts and your starter will keeping running even after you release the key. so when you pulled the cables and then reconected them that is why you got the spark and starter tried to run

This makes sense. I am going to replace the regulator anyway since it is old. Should I replace the solenoid too?

The regulator has NOTHING to do with the failure of the starter. Nothing at all. It might be contributing to short life for the battery by not charging right. After starting does the ammeter show a charge for a while that tapers off to zero? If so its doing its job correctly and you don't know a new one is set so well.

The soleniod also kicks in the bendix on many starters and when that sticks it can destroy the starter or prevent starting. I always replace the solenoid AND the bendix when I have a starter rebuilt (and that rebuild includes bearings).

Then my experience is the rebuilt starter runs for decades.

Well I rebuilt the starter & replaced the solenoid. All was well until today when the starter would not disengage until I removed the electrical supply. I took out the push button start and touched the 2 wires to re-start. Sounds like the switch is defective!

you kind of answered your own Question. your sparking battery terminals is a good start. they should not be loose but they were so your starter was getting low voltage but you keep trying to start it and over heated the starter that was maybe getting bad also
