Hi,
I have just purchased a massey ferguson 35 4 cyl petrol. can someone with a good knowledge answer a couple of questions for me. i can not find the serial # ( is the plate with the serial # on the front under the steering wheel as i can not find one there ) so i believe the age is between 1961-1964. next question is about the gauges, the oil pressure gauge does not work is this just a matter of replacing the gauge and then the next gauge to the right is missing what type of gauge (meter) should this be.
I appreciate any help people can give me

Thanks

Terry

Terry, It sounds like you have the MF35 Special version. The Specials don't have a tractormeter, they are about 3 inches in diameter located in the centre of the dash board right above the steering wheel. The only gauges are a water temperature on one side, and an oil pressure on the other. I would just buy new ones at an auto parts store, and get mechanical gauges, not electric.

Thanks guys, Just a coouple more questions. Randyr my Massey only has the two gauges one is the oil pressure ( which does not work) and the other is as you say must of been a tractometer and the cable goes down to the bottom of the ditributor, there is no other gauges or place for them. Does this help in any identification process.
Scott where do i find the engine # as i can not seem to locate it,and when i get back to the block i will grab the # on the gearbox as the only # i took notice of from the gearboxes was was 189 459 m1 and 183 253 m5

Thanks

Terry ( aslo from Australia )

Terry,

As you are in Oz i am guessing that you have an English-built 35. That would make it a Standard Motors 4 cylinder petrol engine (from Coventry).

The last Standard motor in an MF-35 was in 1959 - the first FE-35 was built in October 1956.

I believe the engine number is on the left side of the block between the oil filler and the ignition coil.

The numbers you found on the castings are part numbers.

Terry,

As far as the Serial No. goes you are in trouble - the number is not anywhere on the tractor except the tin plate on the dash.

You should be able to date the tractor by the casting codes on the gearbox (near the steering drop-arm) and the transmission (in front of the dipstick). They will look something like F 30 1 which equals June 30 1960.

The engine number can also give you a guide - compare it to similar tractors in the Tractor Registry on this site.

Cheers
Scott

Terry, the small gauges (2 1/16 inch diameter) will be these: from the left is the ammeter, the fuel level, engine temperature, then oil pressure.
The big gauge in the middle is what they called the "Tractormeter". It is rpms on the bottom and tractor speed in miles per hour at the top with different scales for the different gears. All the gauges except the tractormeter are available from places like a tractor dealer, or even catalogues like Jeg's or Summit Racing. Sparex or the parts section of this site or maybe the dealer have the tractormeter.
I converted mine from the 12 volt generator to a Delco 10si alternator and since my tractormeter was run by a gear drive on the old genny, I just replaced it with an Isspro 0-3000 rpm electric tach from a local truck parts supplier. Just something for you to know if you ever go to an alternator.
