what is going on with the starter on a mf135? starter will start engine some times and some times it won't make a sound or turn engine at all. it is getting 12 volts to the starter. man at auto electrical repair shop rebuilt the starter last year and at the time said it was as good as a new one.thanks.

Check condition and size of battery cables, as well as condition of their connections. Often a battery cable will show voltage at starter but fails under load when the connection is a little weak. BTDT.

Another common problem with that particular tractor is where the ground cable attaches to chassis (under dash) It's best to route that ground cable to the transmission casting rather than that sheet metal portion of the dash.

Bad grounds or detreriorated wiring probably account for 75% of older auto/truck/trailer/tractor electrical issues.

Ignition switch or starter solenoid or an intermittant bad battery connection or at the starter. Or the starter armature has an open and when it stops with that commutator bar under a brush, its not going to start.

Hi,
As a temporary measure only remove the wires from the safety switch on top of the gearbox and test. It may be this switch that is faulty. If not, refit the wires. Remove the energising cable from the solenoid and make up a temporary wire. Briefly touch this to the live battery cable to start the engine, this will rule out the key switch. If the problem is still there connect a jumper lead between the earth terminal on the battery and the terminal on the end plate of the starter body. Even as with Gerald's suggestion of a bad armature segment you should hear the solenoid 'click'. If there is still no progress it may well be a bad connection inside the solenoid end cap. Take the starter back to your repairer or you will need a soldering iron to remove and inspect it.

Oh yah that !%@#$^&%#$* switch. I have to tug on the wire from that switch to the starter about half the time I want to start my 135. I need to fix the connection at the switch, I guess, but its under a rubber cover buried in mud and stuff.
