I recently purchased a MF 20c ...i am not quite sure about how to operate the pto. in the forward posistion in seems to operate off the rear axles....turns in relationship to the speed of the tractor. In the backward posistion it turns in relationship of the tractor rpm...the problem/question is....does it have a two stage clutch or something i am not aware of...because in order to engage it i have to actually start it in gear to operate it in the backward posistion (meaning the PTO in gear/engaged)....not a good thing i don't think. Can engage it into the forward posistion by just pushing in the clutch. backward is like trying to shift in gears without pushing in the clutch for the backward...therefor have to start it with the PTO engaged....hope i stated this correctly ....thanks

The MF20C does have a two stage clutch when you move the PTO handle forward that is ground speed and is turned by a gear in the differential pinion shaft when the wheels are turning. When you move the handle backwards that is engine speed. The PTO clutch has an internal adjustment that is made up through the inspection hole on the bottom of the transmission bellhousing. I suspect it needs to be adjusted. I have a picture that shows how to make the clutch adjustments I can email you if you send me an email address to send it to.
