I bought an MF 35 with Perkins 152. (I"ve owned a 150 with Perkins 152 for 36 years) The seller told me it had LOTS of oil pressure. It sure does. Pins the gauge. I tried another gauge. Same results. Oil flow seems good, so I don"t suspect a stopped up passage. I"ve heard the relief valve in the oil pump can stick on these engines. True? Can they be adjusted? Can the relief valve be replaced? If the relief can be replaced, how do you pre-set it without having to put the pan back on and reading the gauge? If the pump needs to come off, do I need to pull the timing cover in addition to the pan? Trying to minimize the work if I can.

Looking through the parts for the Perkins engine used in the MF-135 it looks like the only access to the oil pump pressure relief is by pulling pan and probably the timing cover which requires pulling the tinwork and the front axle because the pan is the main part of the tractor's frame.

There is no adjustment, just the plunger, a piston, maybe an o-ring, the spring, a cap, and a cotter key. And it looks like the bypassed oil should be flying past the spring to keep that all lubricated. It must have sat a while to have rusted up.

If it was my tractor, I'd chase down a pressure tap, like that for the oil pressure gauge and make or buy an external liquid relief valve (McMaster-Carr has some, several pages of them, a few even reasonably priced like a 470K81 or 4704K31 or 7844K31) and make a return connection perhaps to the rocker cover and set that external valve for about 50 psi. The I&T book says 30 to 60 psi running fast and warmed up.

The front axle won't need to be removed. I've pulled several oil pans on these tractors without removing the axle. You simple wedge the axle against the bolster to keep it stable, jack the weight up off the front end with a jack under the bellhousing, and unbolt the pan. It drops away just fine. (I've replaced pan gaskets on 135's and 150's that way) The oil pump is driven by a gear that's located behind the timing cover. I've never had to remove an oil pump without already having the timing cover off. Trying to avoid that, but probably won't happen. I've got manuals, but haven't had a chance to dig into them yet. Probably do so tonight. I was told the relief is adjustable. Maybe not. The tractor is going to my son-in-law. If it takes replacing the pump to get it right, that's what we'll do. The external relief sounds like a good idea, but I may still go ahean and replace the pump anyway. The tractor hasn't set for any legnth of time. Previous owner said oil pressure jumped up several years ago and has ran that way for years. Sheet metal looks like a bomb went off under it but otherwise, the tractor is in fair condition. Oh yeah, needs a clutch and tires. We paid next to nothing for it.

Just curious. What brand is oil filter? Did you change oil and filter? Tom

Pressure was high with old filter and oil. Unchanged with new filter and oil. Pennzoil 15/40, NAPA filter (WIX) Same as I've used in my 150 for years. This thing has a TON of oil pressure. It pins a 125 psi gauge.

Generally speaking, the relief valve is a spring with a check ball with the check ball orifice near the pump discharge. The spring can be shimmed to increase pressure or shims removed to reduce pressure. Some are adjustable with a screw. If you replace the valve there should be some instructions to tell you how to preset it. I'm not familiar with the Perkins but I'm sure it has something like I'm describing. You really need a Manual for your Perkins and then you'd have all the info you's need. And yes, if it is stuck or restriced by dirt/sludge or maladjusted, you can see the problem you're having. You can also see this problem with a plugged oil filter.
