I have an unusual MF 2805, serial #J2992. Can anyone here identify this? I have checked with my local dealer and they say that serial number doesn't show up on any of their records.

The 2805 looks like a prototype, with electronic linkage from the 4000 series and European 2005 series. Has a mid 80s feel about it.

Looks like MF had a prototype in the works to replace the 2000 series after all. I've thought about what we might have had in future machines if MF kept building and developing the 2000 and 4000 series machines and Canadian harvesters

Danperkins, I would be grateful if you could post more pics.

It would be great to find out its history. Very exciting!! Thanks for sharing.

I've never seen anything like your 2805. I think it must be a Massey prototype, kinda new version of 2000 series. It doesn't look like it was built in someones farm shop. Professional job. All those electronics, dash gives me impression of early MF rotary combines. Engine looks like it is the 640 Perkins.

Could you get more pictures of the cab, especially gear levers and controls. Thanks, this is really interesting tractor! Thanks for sharing.

I put a picture of the shift/hydraulics console the parts and pieces section. Basically at the lower end is the powershift, middle is the transmission, the upper end is the hydraulics. I haven't seen a console like this one in any 2805 literature I've seen.

I.d like to know the story on this tractor also. I posted about it on the Massey combine site, maybe some of those guys might know something about it.

I will see about getting some pictures of the console. The paint on the tractor is still original. I will be repainting it this summer.

Dan, I really don't know what these people are telling you, but the cab and warning lights, sheet metal, engine w/ the extra cooler on the left side look exactly like my 2775. I'm looking for a set of vents for the hood as mine are burned up from heat and UV. sg

Thanks for the info, maybe our tractors are just some of the newest of the 2000 series.

Dan, mine is old as the hills. It is serial R0023XX. I looked at some of your other pics and there is a lot of difference in your dash, front steering, etc. The engine oil cooler and all of that appears the same as mine though. Mine has had a Simms-Minnemec pump installed and an 8 speed to replace the 24; the old girl would pull a 30ft field cultivator in this heavy Houston Black clay at 8 MPH. All I use it for now is to carry a 60ft 400 gal sprayer and pull a 450 bu grain cart during harvest. It had 10K+ hours on it when I bought it out of Missouri in '86 & if you try to work it real hard now she's always in the need of repair. cg

Thanks for the info. My hours are just over 4000 so by the sounds of things, it has plenty of use left in it. It has a Bosch injector pump on it. I've never really worked it very hard. I have an 8 bottom mold board plow that it pulls without breaking a sweat through heavy clay soil. It has an on land hitch, so I can pull it with duals. Just a great workhorse in my opinion.

Look's like what might have been if production had continued into 1984 and beyond. I have seen a late model 285 that had the same grill with square headlights and a digital dash. Could it be something assembeled in South America or South Africa with different components? Does it have electronic 3 pt hitch like a 3500 series? Is it a 24 speed? Does it have a plastic or steel fuel tank? Could you show us a picture of the inside of the cab? It certainly is interesting. Thanks for sharing it with us.

John, take a look in the parts and pieces photo section. I put dash pictures in as well as pictures of the front axel, which I think is different from other 2805's.

It does have an electronic hitch, and it is the 24 speed, plastic fuel tank. I don't really have any good full cab photos, I'll put one in showing the warning lights.

After doing some simple google searches, I located a little info on the preceeding numbers of some older Massey equipment. It seems the "J" designation is that of an industrial model. I have never head of an 05 being built for mowing crews or anything, but I guess its possible. I don't understand why the cab and frame is so different, typically they just blast some different paint on them and roll them out the door. Just google "massey ferguson serial number j" and start reading.

Thanks for the replys. After looking through some manuals and pictures I don't know what to think either. The rear end looks like the standard 2805 except for an electronic plug assembly on the rear housing. It also has a solenoid valve for controlling the 3 point hitch. The transmission has 3 small levers on it instead of the rotary shaft on the standard one. The front axle is different, by the looks of it. The dash and shift console is totally diffrent also, it has a digital tach...which doesn't work, and the shift pattern is completely different. I bought it 3 years ago from a dealer in Wisconsin, they called it a mechanics special. It ran but wouldn't even move. I took a chance on it and bought it. I removed the round side cover on the transmission and found that one of the rollers that are used to guide the shift forks fell off! It was laying on the bottom of the housing. I put some locktite on the threads and put it back on. It was an easy fix. Now it has been working great since. I have been having trouble buying air filters etc. for it but was able to cross the Donaldson part numbers on them. I would rather not have people coming to look at it, since I'm not interested in selling it. I am a big Massey fan and plan on keeping this one. I would like to know the story on this thing though.

third party image

Here's an original. Your sheet metal is not the same as North American units. Your grill is from something else as is the front lower sheet metal. Your cab is not the same as the 2000 series. The flashers are different as is the top of the cab comparing it to the 2000 series from the 70's and 80's. The front weight bracket is not consistant with the 2000 series. It appears that someone painted it to look like a Massey, then put decals on it to match a Massey. I can't tell you about any other brand names that Massey could have built for, but this is not one from the Massey North America line. I can't tell from the distance of the photo, but it looks like a 540 cube engine with the smaller valve covers.

Dan, The 2805 s/n starts with 9R and then 6
digits or zeros.I have checked the parts book,
"The Official Guide" and other. Are you taking
the number off the s/n plate? Chuck

I'm taking the number off of the plate located at the front lower part of the cab, on the door side. I'm not sure if this is the correct one. I recently got a shop manual for this tractor, and mine has many diffrences from the 2805's that I've seen in pictures anyway, and in the manual. I think it must be one of the later models built.

It has all Bosch electrical controls on it. It also has Bosch transducers on the 3 point hitch controls, and a Bosch digital tach on the dashboard.
