A friend of mine had the front wheel bearings go out on his 245. He has purchased new bearings & a hub. I have a feeling the spindle is going to be bad to. How do you remove the spindle (if needed)? Does anybody have break down on this? Thanks for any help.

Well good news! After inpecting the spindle, it looks good. Bad news is, the parts didn't come in yet. It should go back together just fine. Thanks for your help!

Thanks guys. We have taken it apart. The bearings came out in pieces. I think he let it go way to long. We may be able to clean the spindle up. I will be helping him put it back together tomorrow. I will let you know how it went. Thanks again.

Yeah, that's pretty bad. If you get it soon enough, you can ussually either just tighten them up a little if they're loose but the seal is still good, or replace the seal and the large bearing and be on your way. No way should they ever get that bad...

How bad did it go out? Unless there is a peice broken off of the hub, I'd definatley take it apart before getting too far in debt. The races that are pressed into the hubs aren't too terible to remove with a good punch and a hammer, I've done many of these on our Massey's, Oliver's, and the plow colters on both our Oliver plows which use the same type of bearing and race.

We had to replace the spindle on our 285 a few years back- the threads on the end got messed up years before and we had a different type of repair nut on it- one that was split and had a larger one the thread onto that one to clamp it tight. it held great for years untill I hit a furriow while doing spring fieldwork. The hub popped right off the spindle & the threads were junk. otherwise it would have been fine.

To remove the spindle, you gotta have enbough clearance under neath to drop it down. You take the steering arm off the top, and it should slide right out.

Michael, the axle the hub goes on is part of the vertical spindle, they are one piece. Aftermarket should have them. Haven"t had to replace one yet with over 4000 hours, maybe his is useable, may need some emery cloth on it to clean it up. Good luck with it.
