I have replaced the rope type seals in the rear main on a 3.152 perkins engine. And it still leaks.I have followed the I&T shop manual and it is a detailed installation. The seal retainers are easily removed and the rope seal installed. I have used new retainer gaskets and installed everything very carefully. What am I missing? is there other gaskets to be installed or am I Leaving something out? The engine has been dis-assembled before and I am not sure that all the original parts have been installed. The MF factory gasket set had 2 small square gaskets about 1/2 X 1/2" X 1/4" thick and were cork. Are these to be used at the face of the retainers where the rope seals were installed? I greatly appreciate any help,Very confused and frustrated at this time.

Hello,
It is quite a common occurrence for the leak to come from the rear of the sump (oil pan) The cork gaskets that you mention go hard with age and can allow oil to pass. With suitable jacking and supporting arrangements the sump can be removed with the engine in place. Ensure that all of the old cork gasket is removed around the rear main bearing and front hoop. The side gaskets should be fitted first and held with adhesive. Using a small flat screwdriver insert the cork into the grooves with a little adhesive each end. MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE SEATED. Offer the sump up squarely (trolley jack is best) and it will meet the gasket with about 1/4"to go. Fit several bolts and pull up gently.
For the rope seal housing, there are cheap seals around from non genuine sources. In my opinion they are useless. The material is hard and has little compression. The material in the best ones is flexible and will compress in the housings. Make sure that the gasket is not caught up behind the bottom housing. Top and bottom bolts should be fitted with the housings. Gently tap new seals into place using a hammer handle.

If you have a dealer nearby, look at Parts Manual exploded view. This is why I have Repair Manual and Parts Manual for each tractor that I own. Tom

This may not be relevant but a mechanic (an old experienced one!) told me recently that if the main bearings are worn new rear main seals will continue to leak. Makes sense to me.Cheers, Bill
