Hi,
When you move into 3rd high does it feel like a positive location or does it slide in loosely?
Renewing the springs is a start but would not make much difference if the points on the plungers under the springs are rounded or if the detents in the rods are worn. I suspect that you will find a worn plunger on No 3. With the plunger removed you should be able to inspect the condition of the rod. Looks like the box off again.

Hi david, Thanks for the advise. It is a 8 speed model and i am suprised that the 3rd gear has worn because i would think it is the least used.It is a low houred tractor which was bought new by a small farm in south wales. So i will try renewing the plunger and hope that will cure the problem. Is the 8 speed box bomb proof like the 6 speed? Many thanks

Hi,
In my experience they are very reliable. The problems occur with 3rd gear. With a 6 speed box the gear lever is moved fully left or right then forward or back. With 3rd in an 8 speed box there is always an element of having to find it and I think also an element of something akin to 'panic'. This results in the gear being selected with a little more force than for the other gears.
