Told you that I would be back for more questions.
After reading the repair manual and looking at the parts book my understanding is that the PTO shaft is driven via a hydraulic clutch and that the lever also engauges a brake in the off position. Question: Do I need an ORC on the Cat. 1 PTO shaft? Seems to me that the force of the blades on the brush hog would trasfer back to the brake. Am I thinking right?

Sure will be glad to get this 150 back togeather. Engine is in shop for sleeve and crankshaft work. Front axle support and axle are at another shop for major rework. Seems that the previous owner didn't know to grease the axle bushings. Yea, What bushings, none left, metal to metal.

Thanks, Tom

Re: IPTO on 150 ORC and filters in reply to Tom from Buckeye Lake, 06-03-2007 18:14:28
Thanks for the replies. I pulled the lift cover to check things out. Good thing I did. Pin in position control linkage had no retainer and adjustment knob little spring detent thingie doesn't hold the knob.

I was heading for the filter, but my repair manual said to pull the pto shift cover and remove filter, yea, right. There is a "T" fitting and relief valve, steel line to pto cover above filters (2). Looks to me like I have to split the trans from the diff housing to get to the filter. I do have another small pump running just the pto clutch/brake.

Anyone know what the thickness of the brake ring should be? I have a lot of clerance between the brake piston and ring.

Bear with me, still learning, Tom

I'm with Bob if it has the hydraulic IPTO- Our 285 had to run the silo blower fior a few years after the 1600 went out of commision and was the only other tractor big enough to handle it. It took out the PTO brake in short order. Now the 1600 is back up and running, this will be it's 3rd year back on the blower and the PTO brake on our 285 hasn't gotten any worse since.

An ORC on anything like a brushhog or silo blower or anything that acts as a big flywheel is a good idea(if it doesn't have one already), for both hydraulic brakeing PTO's like Massey's have, and the earlier non-live PTO in 9N's etc...

You don't need an ORC on an independent PTO (IPTO). The clutchbetween the driving shaft and the PTO shaft is only engaged when the PTO is activated. When you de-activate the PTO the clutch releases and I believe there is a brake mechanism that stops the PTO shaft from turning. Nonetheless you can't transmit any torque from the implement/PTO shaft to the driving shaft because the clutch between them is not actuated.

I diagree. The inertia from a bush hog will take out the pto brake unless there is an ORC installed.

I asked about the advisability of an ORC on a IPTO in several forums for this very reason and the consensus opinion was that as long as you slowed the PTO speed down to idle before you turned the PTO off, it's not a problem. My Ford 4610 owners manual doesn't address the question.

What harm is done by the brake not operating? I think the brake is a nice feature but not really necessary. Even with an ORC, you don't get an instant stop.

The pto brake stops the shaft from turning when it is disengaged. If you don't mind the shaft drifting all the time, you don't need a brake. Personally, I would rather put the ORC on and save the brake.
