i have a mf 135 diesel 69 or 73 year model. oil leaks from the front and rear main seals and smokes a little. it runs great though. which rebuild kit should i get and could i do the rebuild myself? about how much would it cost for a mechanic to do the rebuild. any opinions are welcome and appreciated.

Please be advised of the problems with new valve guides being installed.I have just rebuild a 3.152 and replaced all the rocker arms after breaking them . The guides have a shoulder that prevents the guides from being pressed to deep. The valve retainer and top of guide hit and breaks the rockerarms. This is from a ACGO factory rebuild kit.Cost me about $200 extra because no warning was given.

Tim:

The good news is that Perkins has made so many of these engines that rebuild kits are inexpensive.

If you have decent mechanical skills you should be able to rebuild your engine yourself aside from machining work.

Though I cannot offer much advise as to rebuild kit suppliers, and will leave this to the Perkins experts, I will say that I have been dissapointed with the quality of the parts that I have bought from TISCO recently.

I spoke to a perkins shop today. they want the engine serial number. where is it and what would it look like? they said I may be able to change the main seals by rolling them in and not tearing the engine all the way down. what do you think?

Tim:

The engine serial number should be on the left side of the engine (as sitting on the tractor seat). It is stamped into a flat area made for it.

Yes, it is possible to install rope seals without removing a crankshaft using what is commonly called a Sneaky Pete. I have not had good success with this method.
