Those of you who frequent the MF Discussion Page may have notice, I am looking at purchasing a MF 165 (1967, AD4-203, Multipower, independent PTO, w/ a MF Loader Model 85 or 185 the tag is scratched). Anyways, what are the key things to look for PRIOR to purchase as far as mechanical problems or leaks that may indicate an internal problem? I'm sure you all know what I meanthe expensive, headache, or low parts availability problems. As with any used older tractor some repairs, I anticipate, may need to be made regardless.

I just bought a 165 gas. You need to take a look at big deans site that will help you on what to check.

Does the loader work off from the tractor hydraulics? If so, is it connected to the main pump or auxillary pump?

That I cannot say for certainty. There are two valves located in front of the seat that actuate the loader. However to get the loader to work, the 3-pt needs to be lifted up. The valve that actuates the main loader boom also can lift the and lower the 3-pt.

That means the loader is working off from the main pump which also works the 3ph. The auxillary pump supplies pressure for the multi-power and IPTO. If you can, work the tractor enough to to get it warmed up good and see if there is any evidence of the hydraulics fading. That is a sign of a worn out pump. Also check the power steering and front end for ware.
