Hello all - got a couple of questions regards MF 188 and hope you can assist
Do all 188's have independant pto. I assume mine has as clutch does not effect operation although at times when moving pto lever in past could feel it notching. Today, digging post holes a horrible sreeching came out of pto ( like a bearing binding up ) for 5-10 secs and pto stopped working before I could get to turn it off. Now it slowly turns all the time but I can stop it by hand.Whats goin on? Does it sound like the pto clutch, if it has one.
Next question - Just did up front end - bushes, bearings, machined king pins and now there is an oscillation happening with the front wheels at certain speeds, like harmonics. How do we fix it. Looks like there is an adjustment on the steering arm but I don't know which way to attack it. Was thinking it may need a dash of tow in but will the adjustment mentioned acheive this evenly on both wheels. Help please - Thanks - Darrell

Hello Darrell,
First of all, no, 188's can be dual clutch or independant. Some tractors have an original dual clutch set-up so that you have independant with a dual clutch. Most have a 'split torque' clutch which is a fixed plate in the clutch cover.
If I understand your 'notch' correctly it is probably the detent ball on the selector spool moving into place under the pressure of the spring. The PTO turning sounds like oil drag is causing it. This normally happens when the brake pad does not work.
As to the noise I can't really suggest anything that would cause it at this stage. I'm assuming that there was plenty of oil in the casing.
Before you consider commencing the removal of the hydraulic cove bear in mind that to remove the IPTO unit you will have to split the tractor between the rear of the gearbox and centre casing.
It is difficult to do but the brake pad can be replaced without removing the cover. If you can remove the cover then you might see what the problem is.

Why have the kingpins been machined? If worn they should be replaced and new bushes and bearings fitted.
Does your tractor have PAS?
It would appear that you might have overlooked a vital component. Wear in the vertical shaft and bushes that fits in the axle casting can cause all sorts of problems particularly wheel wander.

Have an assistant turn the steering wheel back and forth and look for play and movement EVERYWHERE in the steering and PAS if fitted.
Please come back and let me know what you find.

Hello David -Thanks for your info. How do we tell which pto we have.
Main problem with pto is that it now no longer works, just slowly rotates in or out of gear.
King pin bearing seats were machined, new bearings and bushes fitted. no freeplay in kingpins assembly.
Will check for freeplay in rest of setup. It has PASteering
Thanks - Darrell

Hi, to check which PTO you have;
IPTO Only two positions on lever.
Mechanical, 3 positions, GROUND, NEUTRAL, ENGINE

Hey David - Are you sure about the number of positions thing. Would'nt there still need to be an off position. We don't need to be cruising along in ground drive when we've knocked off engine drive?
Thanks = Darrell

Hello,
When the lever is in the 'Neutral' position, is the shaft still turning? When you press the clutch fully does the shaft stop turning then?

Hello david - Nothing is happening except shaft slowly turns all the time but can be stopped by hand.
Looks like pump may be stuffed. - Multi power not working, remotes not working, pto not working. However tpl is working. Hydraulic pump is actually 2 pumps isn't it - Darrell

Hello Darrell,
Interesting. It may not necessarily be the pump. I think something may have happened to the plated drive unit which mounts the MP/IPTO pump. The plate is held by special circlips which do fail.
I suspect that there will be damage inside. Are you sure that you do not have an IPTO. Rotation through oil drag is not normally associated with a dual clutch tractor? This would account for no pto, no MP, no remotes. The tpl will still work as it is supplied by the Ferguson pump.
You are not quite right when you say 'two pumps'.
It is one pump but has two pumping elements in it.
Cheers

Hello David - Got a mate to help check out the job
What we found when we pulled the lid off the hydraulics - Hydraulic problem turned out to be the second inlet to the pump which has an "O" ringed seal on it had popped out of correct location (not fully dislodged but cocked back on an angle) which meant that the pump was getting a gutful of air. Why would it move do you know?
The second part regarding IPTO - We both had it covered. Turns out it has a 2 stage clutch AND an IPTO pack as well. It looks like it may have been either a different rear end tacked onto the front or someone has put in IPTO at a later date. It's now set up to operate as IPTO. Everything now going OK. Will give it a good work out over the weekend.
There we go _ Darrell
