TO-35 Transmission Leak Problem:

I have a 1957, TO-35, the transmission oil is leaking out of the front seal of the transmission housing and dripping out of the hole in bottom of ( bell housing).

Dealer sold me the following oil to use in the Ferguson: $32 per 2 gallon container
Gearlube 710/M1103
Lubrifiant A Emgrenages
Trans Oil Huile Trans
SAE 90 API GL1 Mineral Oil

Question: Tractor has been leaking for years, but slow leak, just add some oil from time to time and go on. Now it is starting to leak much worst. Is there anything that can be done to slow the leak other than rebuild or replace transmission housing?

I understand that you must be careful using just any type oil sealers as the transmission oil also operates the hydraulic lift and I do not want to harm that operation.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Fred:

I know of nothing that you can do other than spliting the tractor and replacing the transmission input shaft seal.

The good news is that this is not that big of a job.

The bad news is that the input shaft may be worn or otherwise damaged rendering seal replacement marginally effective.

Thanks for the reply:

I believe you are right, the seal was replaced 10 years ago, it did slow leak for many years. The input shaft must be worn, I understand since the tractor does not have multi power, the transmission housing has to be replaced. That would cost more than the tractor is worth.

Could you put a double seal in input shaft?

I may try to keep oil at the low level and just check it more often.

Can I use a cheaper oil in the tractor since it leaks so bad.

Thanks again for your input.

Fred:

I'm not sure if there is any way to install 2 seals. I have heard of folks having the input shaft welded up and turned back to size. You might be able to use a speedy sleeve on the shaft but again, I'm not certain.

Why not try to find a used input shaft or transmission? The going rate on a used transmission for the 35 is around $500-$600.

I do not know where you are but I know of a salvage 35 including the transmission but no engine that can probably be had for $500.

Of course you can use cheaper generic GL-1 oil from your local tractor store rather than the MF oil.

Good luck with it.
