I have completely rebuild the engine from Ferguson 35 tractor. I started engine and ran to warmup for setting of valve clearance. Several rocker arms were bent.I installed new rocker arms and rolled engine by hand and broke two new arms. I have set timing per IT manual, everything checks out. I still have valve and piston interference. I have triple checked flywheel position, top dead center of #1 piston, crank and timing marks. I set the clearance at .014. Can anyone suggest a cure? I am not an expert but I have rebuilt several engines and have never incurred this problem.

With everything you have already checked there are only two other things that I know of that will cause that problem. One is if you had the gear removed from the camshaft check that the D stamped on the gear and the end of the camshaft are lined up with each other. The other thing is if you have replaced any valves or valve seats they may not be deep enough in the head they should be at least 0.052 below the surface of the head. I have run into that problem several times through the years. One other thing I was helping a guy with that problem not long ago the valve springs that came with his overhaul kit was wrong and the coils were thick and hit together before the valve traveled all the way and they were bending and breaking the rocker arms. Hope some of this helps you find your problem.

I have checked flywheel twice.Unthreaded hole on crank flange is lined up with unthreaded hole on flywheel.

Just went through this one my MF 35. Broke a set of rocker arms plus one more befor discovering the valve guides were too high. Valve spring retainers were hitting the guides and breaking the rocker arms. Hope this helps.
