I Just bought a 38 101 JR that is running over 200 degrees.. Pulled the top housing where I would expect to find the thermostat and found no thermostat. Normally I would think that this would cause the engine to run too cool, but this is not the case... started the tractor with the housing off and the water pump seems to be circulating the coolant real good. Seems to be running kinda ruff also. Cant run the tractor without the choke pulled all the way out leading me to believe that it is running lean... attempted to adjust the mixture ratio and was able to get the tractor to run without the choke being out but runs worse with the choke in even after the adjustment. I am starting to think that it is a timing issue. there do not seem to be any bubbles or white smoke so I dont think that there is an exhaust leak.. No water in the oil, and no oil in the water... How do I adjust the timing, I mean can I just loosten the distributer and give it a tiny bit of a turn with the tractor running? Not too many people around here in alaska that know much about this kinda stuff. I want to use the tractor to pull a New Holland 276 baler if it wont mess the tractor up, but first I gotta get the thing to cool down... It heats up from just driving it around, not working it. I wish this was as easy to understand as it is on my 1950 ford 8n.. But it is a beautiful tractor...

Anybody have any idea's???? Thanks in advance. Mark from alaska
