I just had to replace a bunch of parts on the steering on my 1975 135 diesel. When i finally went to set up the steering like it said in the manual, i noticed that when i got it put back together that the rack raises 1/2 inch at each end of its travel. i think that the cylinder is at its extent, and just turning the wheel is raising the rack not the steering cylinder.

Is it just wear that causes this, and do you think it would be harmful to power the system like this? i also noticed that the housing has been welded on the top where the cover bolts on. Looks like the rack was pushed through the top of the housing. I am scared that i will ruin some of the new parts if i try it.

The rack on the power steering piston is held against the gear by the gear box cover. Mine has some angles welded on the outside to make it stronger. Be sure the two shafts and the ball worm and its rack have enough travel to match the piston travel. A tooth off from proper synch might cause troubles that way.

It might also be that the cyinder reaches its end before the other parts and with the cover preventing the rack from rising that the cylinder will be the stops on the steering system.
