Hey Guys,
I need to replace the oil seal on the valve end rod on top of the steering cylinder of my 1974 MF165. Anybody know if it can be done without removing the cylinder from the tractor. I've done that before and it was a real pain in the pitoohee!

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
Matt

I reworked my MF65 sterring cyl. The seals are not O-rings, and you will need to get them from dealer. Take the cyl off of tractor so you can get in on bench. On MF65 you remove the grill screens, grill bottom plate, and left side panel. Turn the steering wheel to the extreme left position and leave it there. Remove bolts on bracket(RT side. On left end of cyl remove cotter pin and bolt around pin. The pin on left end will not clear the front support unless wheels are in extreme left position. I put trans hyd fluid in steering. Check Big Dean's web site on fluid.

Hi Matt,
As far as I am aware the spool body on the different makes fitted is removable. All types show O rings. It may reduce your leak but it will probably not cure it if there is wear between the spool and body.

Hello David,
A guy overhalued everything for me last year EXCEPT for the end-rod seal because he didn"t have one and thought the old one looked fine. He even put a new rod in. As luck would have it, the seal was NOT fine and is leaking very badly, now. Since you think I can probably do this with the unit still in the tractor, I won"t have to take it to by brothers garage (miles away) and I"ll just do in on site at the barn. That"ll make life easier.
Thanks again,
Matt
