The recommended hydraulic oil for my MH 444 is Type A ATF. Since this is no longer made, what should I use? Should I use the Universal ATF or one of the many hydraulic oils?

I use the regular hydraulic fluid from Tractor Supply in my old Case. Don't use the type that is made for tranny and hydraulics together.

Len, what do you mean by "regular" hydraulic fluid? It looks like there are many to choose from. In just one store (Fleet Farm), I see AW32, AW46, AW68, AW100, Universal, Case/IH, John Deere, and 5W20. Would Universal be what you refer to as regular?

by "regular" I think he just means that it isn't a hydraulic/transmission lube, like what JD, IH, and MF run.

If you don't have anything else, it shouldn't matter so much what fluid you use, but I'm thinking that ATF was a lighter fluid, so a lighter fluid like a AW32 would be my first choice.

As far as tranny fluid, the replacement for "A" is the Dex/merc III fluid. Some say it's ok, other say stay away. That's what we've got in the over/under on our 1855 and ran in our 1600's hyrda-power without any ill effects, both originally had type "A". Only reason it's not in the 1600 anymore is that I had it gone through and it came back with hydraulic fluid in it.(assuming a type of hy-trans because of the application)

We run 2 massey's and 2 Oliver's, but we buy our oil in bulk and just run MF's Permatran III in all. Has no ill effect in the Ollies, and if we were the type to get worked up about a little cross-contamination of different oils between tractors (which we're definately not) it wouldn't be a problem.
