It sounds a little steep, but a little more information would help. What kind of hours are on it, and what kind of work was it used for? If a lot of hours are on it, has it had any motor work done? How does it run? Does it come with a loader? If not, was there a loader on it previously?

the tractor shows 11000 hours on the meter, it was used for grain farming, sickle mowing no loader, looks like it has mounting spots for a loader, no major motor work ever, brakes work great hydrolics work great three point with two remote hook ups, starts great, runs real balanced, all gears High and Low run quiet and smooth, power steer has no problems lights work no major dings or dents front screens are real straight looks like it never hit anything with the nose. perkins diesel new rear tires, paint is original not in bad shape, do you think it's too much tractor for a hobby farm (30 acres mowing, baling, general ground work etc...) I am also looking at a Ford 860 for the same purpose, I am looking for something with a two stage clutch and 3 pt thats safe to use and more balls than a 8N. Thanks for the reply

Rob,

From what you describe, it sounds like it was well cared for. My biggest concern would be the time left on the motor; 11,000 hours is quite high for that price, although it sounds to be running quite well. I have a gas 65, and I doubt it would ever make it to that number of hours without a rebuild. It would be interesting to hear from those with the Perkins diesel in a 65 as to what kind of hours one could expect from that motor before having to rebuild. From what I have heard, the Perkins diesel is an outstanding and durable motor. Regarding your question on whether the 65 is too much tractor for a hobby farm, I would say no. I also use mine on a hobby farm, and there are many occasions on which I have been happy to have the extra power. As a comparison for pricing, I paid $4,000 Cdn for my gas 65 (a 1961 model) with 2,100 real hours on it. It had only been used to haul a wagon and other light chores. It had never had a loader on it and the PTO had rarely been used. Anyone out there with information on durability of the Perkins diesel?

Pat

i dont really know what you are going to use it for but that price sounds awfull steep. You could buy alot nicer and bigger tractor at an auction for that price.

Where's Big Dean when you need the expert?

Anyhow, I've been told as a rule of thumb...
8000hrs... its been paid for
12-14,000 hrs. average rebuild time

My personal opinion, I think $6k is somewhat high... now if you're talking a MF165 different story. If's it truly got 11,000 hrs.(thousand) maybe $2500-3K no matter what condition the rest is.

I certainly wouldn't pay "top dollar" for a shiny next to new looking car with 250,000 miles on it...

Come to think of it, look at that hour meter again... I've never seen an hour meter past 9999.9 hrs... it rolls over to the beginning 0000.0 ?

you are probably right the first two numbers were 1 1. so it could be 1 1100.0 the farmer didn't know for sure if it had rolled the meter over. so I would venture a guess that that's alittle low at 1100 hours but I could be wrong. 1100 hours translates to 28 (40 hour) work weeks, I drove this tractor and it did not smoke even under load. it might be that low of hours he stopped farming with it 8 years ago (he rents out his ground now). I will still be considering it.
thanks a lot, you have been great!! I just don't know enough about these tractors.

tractors are expensive to repair. I own a 255 Massey Ferguson one of the 65 Massey Fergusons' replacements. Back in the late 70s' I owned a 1963 model 65 MF diesel row crop . Right rear planetary went bad, the multi-power seal started to leak, the pto clutch started to slip. need I say more. The dealer wanted almost as much to fix my tractor as I paid for it. The 65 series planatary has to be built out of roller needle brgs. dealer parts. I did the work myself 1500.00

Rob,
Back in 1962-1969 my dad farmed with a 65 Massey.
I must admit the tractor was a great running tractor, but the perkins engine is not the best in fuel consumption. But if you are only using it on 30 acres the fuel consumption isnt probably a big factor. I work for and auction company here in Wisconsin, from what you explained about the tractor here in Wisconsin this tractor would bring about 2500.00 to 3400.00. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR DECISION. Tom
