I bought a parts 44 Massey Harris diesel over the weekend.

I was going to use the parts for a 44 LP I already had - rims, battery box, etc...

After thinking about it, I guess I could go the other way and fill in some pieces on the diesel with parts from the LP...

Which tractor would be better to keep together?? Was the diesel version or the LP version scarcer?

Was the 44 a sleeved engine? Would the sleeves/pistons interchange between the two types?

Thanks for any info,
Howard

Hi
LP tractor is a much rarer bird!Sleeves are the same, but each piston is different.Diesel pistons have an extra oil control ring below the wrist pin,but work fine to put in a gas engine.Gas & LP take the same rings ,but different size wrist pins in some engines.LP engines had higher compression.I have a 55 gas changed to LP and it runs fine, more power than my gasser.I`m with Cast Iron Dave, fix them both sometime.Have fun!!

I guess you would have to decide which would be the most cost effecient to restore. I would think the diesel would be the most valuable, but could also be more money if you have to go through the pump and nozzles. You could also find more parts and fix them both up one day. Good luck and have fun.

The Continental H260/HD260 were wet sleeve engines. I'm not sure which tractor was more rare, it really depends on what you like more. Where are you located? I might be interested in the LP engine if you decide to fix up the diesel. I'm in Va, but I don't mind a little driving. I know that the diesel and gas pistons should be the same, but I'm not sure about the LP pistons.

Thanks a lot for the comments, fellows!

It's not like I need much excuse to go looking for another "parts tractor"! ha...

I'm located in the Oklahoma Panhandle about 40 miles from New Mexico, Preacher, so either shipping or the drive would be a lot!

Howard
