Does anyone have experience unsticking the main clutch on a Ferguson F40 (same as Massey Ferguson 50)? This one has sat for several years and it is stuck engaged. The foot lever pushes down fine and has a feel to it but the drive train runs continuously. Thanks

Try this...

Pull the inspection cover and spray the clutch down with brake cleaner. It may break the surface tension of the oil that is causing the clutch to stick to the pressure plate. Spray, rotate 90 degrees, spray, rotate 90 degrees, spray, and keep doing this while someone is depressing the clutch.

Be careful. Bumping the starter while underneath could be dangerous. Also keep the brake cleaner out of your eyes. Ask me how I know! BTW, electra-clean, or starting fluid may work if you're in a pinch.

Good Luck,

Aaron

A lot of times, just driving it around with the clutch pedal down will unstick it. Put the tractor in gear and try to start it. If it has a safety switch that prevents this, then you will probably have to push start it. Putting it in a higher gear will get results quicker, but be safe. Jim

Hi,
You would have to make a balance between the risk of breaking the clutch plate and the work involved to replace it or trying to free it by some 'drastic' means.
On numerous occasions in the past we have freed seized clutches by engaging first or second low gear and a fast idle and driving the tractor.
Hit the brakes as hard as you possibly can for a split second and release. This method has proved successful on most occasions.
Good luck.
