I have a MF 165 with the perkins diesel engine.I have been using Valvoline All-Fleet Plus 15W-40
diesel oil in it for several years. The tractor run good and always starts in the winter if I plug it in.The problem I have is that a lot of oil is dripping out of the bottom of the muffler
on to the exhaust manifold and I worried about the tractor catching fire.Would it be possible that I'm using the wrong type of diesel oil for an old tractor or does the tractor need a motor job.I read some where that certain oils are not good for some motors.I don't use the tractor a lot and only add 3 or 4 litres of oil a year.
Thank you,Lonnie

Are you sure it's not diesel fuel. I had a crack in the fuel tank that was dropping diesel fuel onto the exhaust manifold.

Thanks for the comments. You are right about the tractor not being worked very hard. The hardest work it does is snowblowing the laneway in the winter.I'll degrease it and pressure wash it and then see if one of my friends want to use it to do some plowing.Thank you,Lonnie

No probelems with the oil you're running, and it's probably not even pure oil coming out your exhaust. Most likely what MF#1 said and it's slobbering, which means it isn't getting run hard enough to burn all the "stuff" out of 'er. It's a little bit of raw fuel, and lots of carbon that makes that black sticky stuff.

Commmon cause is very short runs and not getting up to temperature before being shut down. Best way to fix it, strap onto a plow and just give 'er. Work it hard for an hour or 3 and the next time you start it up, a bunch of crusty carbon chunks will blow out the exhaust and it won't slobber for a while.

Our 1855 Oliver seemed like it didn't quite run as it should, but we have a bunch of plowing to do so I wasn't too worried. Puklled it hard all day, then parked it by the fuel tank and ate supper. After I filled it up again and started it up, I got showered in chunks of carbon. Could tell it ran a little better too.

Am no expert but if you have used that oil this long, keep using it. Sounds like you have a "slobbering" problem, you don"t work it hard enough to keep the soot blown out of her. That, and you probably may need an overhaul. If you"re worried about fire then use some engine/grease cleaner and clean it up every so often so it doesn"t build up. A fire extinguisher would add some peace of mind. That"s a tough tractor, take care of it and it"ll last a long time.
