Rear end play is back..why?

I have a question about the rear axle play adjustment on my MF50. The rear end is the same as a Ferguson F40 or TO35. Last year I replaced the axle seals and went through the shimming process by the book to set axle preload. Everything went well and I was happy with the results. After I used it a few times it was still good..no noticeable movement when you grab the tire and try to shake it. The other day, I happened to test it again with the shake test and there was a definite clunking now. I checked all the bolts on the trumpets and at the ends of the axle where the shims are and they are all tight. My question is, why would so much play return after only one season? Is this a sign of the bearings going? The tractor is used for mowing and snow removal and the odd job here and there. The rear end oil is clean and only 6 months old. There are still some shims left I can remove, but is there anything else I should look for?

Thanks!
Dan

Make sure that its not the spin out rails and clamps on rear rims if so equipted.Thats what I finally found with my 65 that you could see wheel wiggle when going back and fourth while useing rear blade

It doesnt have the spin out rims. all wheel nuts/bolts are tight. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Hi, Providing the bearings and shrink-on collars are fitted correctly to the shaft it is not possible for endfloat to reoccur unless something is happening with the bearing. Are you happy that the bearings were fully seated? I have found that when carrying out the endfloat adjustment that it is advisable to have both wheels off the floor. I would suggest jacking up, perhaps removing a wheel and trying to determine how much endfloat you have to start. Check for any roughness when turning the shafts.

Thanks David. I did have the tractor jacked up with the wheels off when I did this the first time. I didn't notice anything odd with the bearings then and didn't do anything to them other than pack them with grease. I guess I'll have to take another look.
