We have a Massey 135 3cyl perkins and the hydralics are really weak. They will hardly lift the post hole auger when drilling a hole . They will not lift it if in deep and muck. Any ideas? We have changed the oil but not the filter. I am not sure where it is. Thanks Paul

Hi,
There is a very strong possibility that a blocked filter is your problem. If you have a standard transmission with a mechanical PTO, drain the oil. Remove the LH round cover (as you sit in the seat) You will see a domed metal cup with a handle on top. It should have a locking wire attaching it to the pump body. Cut the wire and remove it. You may need a pliers to slacken the cup. Remove the cup. The filter is underneath and then the lower cup and an O ring under that. Clean as required. Be careful there are plenty of sharp edges on the cups. Replace and rewire. Some heavy electrical cable with the plastic removed is good. If you have a late 135 the filter may be accessible through a triangular plate on the underside of the casing.
If you still have the problem, remove your post borer from the tractor. Move the DRAFT lever to the DOWN position. At the point where the top link is attached check for endfloat (in and out movement). Ideally there should be none. If there is movement here this again may be the problem.
Please come back and we'll go through the adjustment sequence.
Cheers

If the auger is down a ways in wet type clay, it takes a lot of force to pull it up. If your drilling in sticky conditions, keep raising and lowering the bit as you slowly go deeper. It will make it a lot easier. I've drilled a lot of holes with a bobcat and it's a good thing I could put it in reverse or I'd have had a big problem numerous times. With a tractor you don't have that option. Dave
