MH30 starts funny after carb job

It used to leap into action at the first touch of the starter, but would stall easily when put into gear. After my friend did the carb it doesn't leak as much fuel out the air intake, but it has developed a tendency not to start until I take my finger off the start switch. Then it burbles, gurps, offers a puff of smoke, and gradually speeds up to run smoothly. Once running it is very smooth and doesn't die out.

While working with it in a building the other day I noticed the exhaust smells pretty rich.

What do I adjust?

A comment on Dr Chris' suggestion...I wonder if it would help to diagnose the problem by disconnecting the starter and jumping with a different battery. This would isolate the starting & running circuits.

My 30 behaves the same way, and fouls the plugs after some time. Plowing snow in the winter is no trouble. Had it out this weekend plowing with a two-bottom...tractor could barely keep up and fouled the plugs on a regular basis...not surprising given the amount of smoke coming from the exhaust. Perhaps this is just a 'feature' of these tractors?

It could also be a weak ignition system, when you take your finger off the starter suddely theres no draw anymore and all the juice is free"d up for the coil to use.

Maybe when your cranking the starter it isn"t leaving enough juice for a good spark. Do you still have the hand crank? See if it starts better with a turn of that.

Just a thought.

It might not be a bad idea to give it spark plugs.

I'm leery of using the crank because of published tales of broken bones. It starts very easily on a hill, though.

Before the carb job it started quickly, though the air intake pipe was so loose gas ran out the bottom of it. I wonder if it now starts slowly because of gas puddling in the air intake pipe and flooding the carb?

Suppose I could pull the intake hose off and give it a try that way.

More later,

Rod

I would start with the float level. I've never worked on the carb on this model, but the theory is the same....
