I just bought a massey ferguson tractor. The guy i bought it from said it was an industrial 35, which according to my research would make it a 202 or 204. He said it was industrial because of the heavy wheel weights, and because under the 2 coats of blue paint it is obviously yellow (paint is chipping off). However it has an adjustable width front end, which i thought the industrials didn"t have, and after closer inspection there is red paint under the yellow paint. The serial number plate is missing but the one for the engine is still there, it says Z134 72484. So i know it is a "35" motor, but no clue what year or model it is. Any advice on how to figure out what i now own?

okay i did post a photo on the photo page. It is labled 1962 MF35?. Aaron you were right about the engine, the good folks at Montes equipment were able to tell me my engine was made in june of 1962. So using that as a reference date, i have come up with the following assumptions. "E" stands for may, and the "k" stands for the 11th year the 35 was made (1962). NOw that might be a stretch but my casting numbers consistently have the E and the K in them. Since the engine was made in late June of 1962, i made a leap of faith.

The tractor does have the single pair of brake rods. I am not sure that the Red paint that i am seeing is original either. the front wheels have red paint on them, and the hood is the only thing that doesn't seem to have red paint under all the other colors, leading me to believe it may have been stripped down at one time and repainted red, then covered up by multiple other colors.

So, i am starting to think that this was in fact a 35, but i am not completely convinced. If you have any more ideas i appreciate the help.

Thanks for the replies guys I really appreciate it. I tried to post some more numbers on here earlier but when I hit submit, it never showed up on the forum.

Above the 6 E 17 k is 189 459M1. ON top of the transmission near where a sensor is located (it is disconnected so I am not sure what it is). Is the number 180500m94 stamped into the casing. Under that is 005768.

On the transaxle the number 183 253M5 is above E 28 K. On the left axle on top near the wheel is a 7, and over a bit, moving towards the center of the tractor is E 15 K. on the right side it is E 8 K and a 4.

The engine tag also has Z134A 203P on it.

From everything I have been able to find so far, other peoples tractors have had a number in place of either my E or K where mine show up. But I am not sure about that.

Hi: I suggest you post a photo. You can post them under the "tractor photos" link on the left. "A picture is worth a thousand words" I hope you have a 2135.....I really like mine....it has 9250 hours and starts and runs great.

Hi to all, The 35 was sold (red and grey) as a
special or deluxe. The 35 was sold (yellow) as a
utility or as a turf special. Also sold was a
2135 with the same Z 134 and as turf or utility.
They were not called industrial but assumed to be
because of the yellow paint. But are we not dealing with a 35 tractor? If underneath it all
it seems that the base coat is agricultural colors
and the heavy weights were avail for all models.
My 2 cents. Chuck

Sorry, forgot to add the rest of my info before hitting "send". it is a standard 3 speed with the high and low gear selector as well. no shuttle or multipower. according to the dealer i bought it from, it has the two stage clutch, wich it didn't feel like it did. He held down the clutch and had his mechanic turn the pto shaft with a wrench and said " yeah it a dual stage clutch" it keeps spinning when you push the clutch in 1/2 way, but his statement was that it might still turn, essentially freewheeling, but if you hooked something up to it, it would stop and not have power going to it. We'll see about that part. Anyway it has from the left, an amp meter, then fuel, hour meter in the center, then temp, then oil pressure guage. thanks.

okay some more info, First, i got it cleaned up a little better and in the right light so i now see the number for the engine is actually z134 724847. On the edge of the engine serial number tag is stamped "spec 37". on the right side of the transmision, below the steering box is a 6 and then over a bit from there is E 17 K. on the left of the tranmision is 189-459 m1. the transaxle has the number 183 253 m5. I don't know how to read these codes and can't seem to find anwhere to tell me how to. Any guesses?

Above or below the E 17 K should be some numbers. It indicates the day/month/year of tranny casting. Might help identify the year model.

Your engine is a 62-63 model based on comparison on the tractor registry, so the above mentioned number sequence ought to end in 2 or 3.

A quick search of the archives of this Discussion Forum reveals that the Continental Z134 engine was fitted to TO 35, MH 35, MH 50, MF 50 and MF 135 tractors (and perhaps others) - so we'll need a bit more information.

What type of transmission, Multipower?, two-stage clutch? What gauges on the dash? Any casting dates on the gearbox or transmission?

I would guess that it is a fairly early model given the low engine number.

Most industrial 35's and 135's have a dual braking system which can be a pain in the ****.
The normal set up is one pair of rods going to the rear and narrow brake drums. The industrial has a handbrake, two sets of rods and drums which are 'twice' the standard width to accommodate the two pairs of shoes on each side.
It is possible that you have a semi-industrial version.
