Today after I got home from school we went down to the dealer to pick up our 285 after getting an overhaul done. First thing I noticed when we started it up is that the tach wasn't working. I fooled aroudn with it for a good 1/2 hour in the lot yet, getting help from the guys there even though it was going past 5 and it was a really beautiful day.Seems that when the cable is shoved too far from the tach side, the cable won't drive, but if it's pulled out a little bit it'll spin. The cable is good, we replaced it a couple years ago and I remember having the same trouble, but I got it after fooling around with it for a little while and it's worked since. Once I got home I pulled off the alternator because it needs to be checked out anyway, and started at it again, looking at the tach drive and everything. The peice the cable screws onto by the engine easily pulled out of the rest of the body, making me use 2 pair of pliers to get the cable nut off the peice. The gears seem to be fine, and when I stick just that end of the gear onto the cable it has no trouble engaging with the cable and no slipping of any kind at any depth of insertion into the drive. I put the drive gear back in without the restof the housing peice and tunred it agains the gear coming out of the engine, and it has a little slop but it will stop after a certain point, maybe 1/16 of a rotation, if even that much. I fastened the other side back to the tach and tried to turn it form the drive side but I couldn't. With the cable loose from the tach, I can stick just the drive cable into the tach and it spins freely. Any ideas or common problems I can try to trouble shoot? The dealer doesn't have a tach drive in stock, but can get one. Trouble is they cost just over $100 and we already are gonna be struggling with the overhaul bill. The dealer has been nothing but great everytime we deal with them. They are a very large dealership that sells into Canada and to the major big time operations, but they still have a great parts staff and service department that will help anyone that walks through the door. They are all looking for the customer's best interest and will make it right, but I know this is a problem that would have existed before they tore into it. They just happened to disturb the cable and now it won't drive. Any help or ideas are appreciated!!!! I want to try to get it figured out before noon on Saturday so I can order any parts I may need- we wanna get this tractor dualed up and ready to go!! Donovan from Wisconsin
