My tractor just shut down while bushhogging, it will not start now. I can start it by pulling it, but I have to keep the engine revs high or it will die. I changed the fuel pump and bled air from the fuel lines but I still have to pull start it and it will die if the engine revs are reduced. I was hoping someone might have an idea on how to fix my problem

Hi there,

i'm having the exactly same problem i think.
I get no fuel to my injectors, even if i bleeded everything.. I thought it was the injector pump (big bucks, i now), but i bought a new one (Working one). But still same problem.

No fuel to the injectors, but the fuel reaches the injector pump, but no further.

I can build a pressure by the hand pump, I wonder if it's the handpump wich doesn't work when trying to start with the starter?, that doesn't send fuel in correct pressure to the injector pump?

Thanskful for any tips or ideas..

/Andreas

Hi Ronald

How old is the diesel fuel in your tank ?

I had same problem with my 135 diesel few years ago. I found that there was great amount of water in the fuel I purchased. The water recuperation bowl went full in few hours i found that when engine began to protest. I mentionned to a friend who was old diesel mechanic. He says when there is water in the fuel the very precise internal components in injection pump and injectors develop surface rust with rapidity.

He suggested to put one quart of engine oil per fuel tank fill. I tried and after 3 tank refills the engine returned gradually to normal operation and smooth idle. He said that I had few $ to loose
i was happy to loose $ 9.00 on that one....

It may work...It may not....$9 to gamble...

My 2

A little more detail will be useful in helping you. Were you having problems before any current work on tractor? When you say fuel pump, are you refering to lift pump or injection pump? Why did you change it? Did you change fuel filter(s)? Do you have MF Operator Manual, and did you exactly follow the bleeding steps? Have you re-checked all line fittings that you removed or loosened?
This will allow us to help you. Tom

I have a shop manual and in the trouble-shooting section it suggests it may be the lift pump not the injector pump that is causing the problem, so I changed it. I also changed both fuel filters. and bled the air from the lines according to the manual. the engine spins with the starter but will not start unless pulled. I bled all lines except the injectors. i still haven't got it to work. It ran fine before just had fuel and oil leaks.

Ron, you have me stumped. Some little things that you might try. Fuel tank vent? Air intake filter clogged? Did you pump the lift pump by hand and observe the stream? Was fuel flow unrestricted? Look in Parts Manual and see if any kind of screen in fuel tank? Condition of fuel? Try bleeding at each injector. Don't know much else to check. Hope it is not the injection pump. Keep us posted. Tom

Tom, that's going to be my next step, bleeding at the injectors. If I still have problems I guess it must be the injector pump and that is big bucks, and also my starter is going bad from all the use. I recon I'll have it rebuilt or get a new one of those too. Thanks for your help I'll let you know what happens.
