Hi Folks,
Second attempt to post a few questions. I've just purchased my first Massey Ferguson, a 165 diesel, and am working to get it into better shape. I just replaced the water pump without difficulties but now face some tougher challenges. Can a fair, careful amateur mechanic like myself replace the brake discs without too much danger of making a mess of the job? I'm also wondering about the power steering. The reservoir was almost empty so I filled it with the recommended fluid. Now it jerks mildly and when turning to the left, will pull forcefully all the way left unless a firm grip is on the wheel. Could the valve be sticking or does this sound like the pump is not working properly? Finally, the serial # is 9A40I49, can anyone tell me the year of manufacture? I assume that "I" is Massey's way of stamping the number 1. Any advice appreciated. I really like the tractor. It runs great and if I can get a few things repaired it should serve me for many years. Thanks.

Larry

Larry.....congrats on acquiring the 165. I also have a '68 model w/ bad brakes.

If you decide to tackle the brake job update us on progress. I've been putting it off for years.

Jeff

Hi Devin,

Cat Square, North Carolina, USA, is about 50 miles northwest of Charlotte in the Vale area of Lincoln County. Sadly, it no longer appears on most maps and is no longer a very rural area. It is a crossroads community and got the name because folks who had unwanted cats back in the 20's and 30's would put them out at the general store at the crossroads, knowing they would be fed because there was always some scrap food or milk leftover for them. My grandfather owned and ran the general store and bought milk from the local farmers. I'm 61 so this has been a few years ago but happily the name stuck and the area still has the colorful name of Cat Square. Take care.

Larry, still living in the beautiful and somewhat rural "Cat Square, North Carolina"

Larry,
I too live in a small community called Gray Rock. It is located in Granville county outside of Oxford north of Durham NC. Good luck with your 165. I have had one for about 7 yrs and it is a great tractor. It does not have enough HP to do everything but it will work hard for you. I bought a 100 hp MF last spring.
Email if you see any good auctions upcoming in your area and if intrested I will do the same.

Devin

Hi Larry,
Can you replace the brake discs "without making a mess of the job". The first question here is perhaps can it be done without making a mess of YOURSELF? As you will be aware, the wheels are quite heavy, possibly ballasted. The axle housings are heavy and unwieldy and should have something more than a trolley jack for example to move them on. So, if you have suitable tools and a safe means of lifting the axles then the answer is YES.
There is nothing complicated in the brakes as long as safety precautions are observed.
As to your serial number. My information for Detroit production tells me that your tractor was made in early 1968. Tractors made in the UK at this time had dry disc brakes so I assume yours has as well. Why do you want to change the discs?
Normal brake problems mainly revolve around the brakes 'grabbing' when applied....all or nothing!
Excessive pressure required usually is due to leaking oil seals. If your brakes are grabbing be prepared to replace the actuators as well.

As far as I am aware the same type of basic steering system is fitted to all 165's. Your steering oil loss could be ending up in the engine. A common problem when the seals go hard. The oil level should be checked on full right hand lock so that the rod is 'inside' the cylinder or you can overfill it.
Erratic on non assistance can be down to a number of things. The system works by having a set amount of movement to actuate the assistance. Once this amount is exceeded you do the work before the assistance starts. Remove the front grill and have an assistant move the wheel in the free travel. Look for wear everywhere, particularly in the adjusting barrel on the spool, the point where the rod is anchored to the casting and in the main vertical shaft in the axle casting. You will see an arm with a large screw and nut noving against the arm underneath. This is your point of adjustment so do not disturb this for the moment.
Please come back and let me know what you find and we'll take it from there.
Regards from this side of the pond.

1968 model. I wouldn't say the brakes will be easy, but a decent mechanic shouldn't have too difficult of a time, Not sure on your power steering issue.
