I have a 240 that began to have serious blowby within about 15 hours time. from next to none to alot, also decreased power, excellent oil pressure, 65-70lbs. I pulled the head to have a look at the sleeves, and found a blown head gasket between two cylinders. My question is , do I need to go any further, or just replace the gasket? There doesn't appear to be any grooving , deck seems flat, I will check the head for warp, but itlooks ok. What now? Thanks for any advice.

What color was the smoke? Blue smoke is from oil burning. If it shows at start up and then clears, it would be valve seals.
If constant, it's a bad ring seal or cylinder problems of some sort.
Black smoke would be too much fuel, too rich a mixture if gas, injector trouble if a diesel.
White smoke is coolant. A blown head gasket sure can cause antifreeze to leak into the cylinder and make white smoke.
If the decks are flat and the surface is smooth and not damaged, marked or gouged, and is straight, I would just replace the head gasket.
Just make sure the gasket surfaces are free of any residue from the old gasket. They need to be smooth.
Hope this helps.
