My tractor will die when I let out on the clutch. Both gear shifts will be in netural, but it acts like it is under a big load. The tractor does not try to move forward or backward when letting out the clutch and it must be engaged in order to crank.

A very big thanks to all of you for such a quick response. It sounds like more than a problem I can handle. I"ll take it to a dealership. Thanks again.

And shift "deliberatly". Don't slide diagonally from gear to gear.

That sounds more like something has come loose and got wedged between two gears maybe the shift lever hold down spring or a piece of it, a piece of broke shift fork or something else. You might try to jack up one of the back wheels put both shift lever in forward gear have someone hold the clutch down and try to turn the wheel backwards that will sometimes make it fall out but you still will need to get what ever it is repaired

Hello,
Do I understand that you have to press the clutch pedal in order to start the engine? Do you have excessive free movement on the long gear lever? If so it sounds like you have two gears engaged at the same time. This is a common problem with MF's that have seen a bit of life. Remove the oil filler plug next to the gearlevers. Using a very heavy screwdriver and preferably a bit of 1/2" round bar with a shallow 'umbrella handle' curve at one end, do the following.
First look inside and you will see the selector slots. One will be out of line, probably further furward. Make sure that the brake is applied and that there is no load on the transmission. Carefully prise the front one back until it clicks into place. Problem should be solved.....until next time. It will undoubtedly happen again.

DavidP, as usual, you post great information. May I add a comment. Big Dean says that to prevent this in the future, make sure that you apply downward pressure on the shifter when changing gears. C. T.

Hi, absolutely agree, but try and tell some drivers to do that!!!! Some can only do a diagonal change!!!
