After reading another post can a 1100 be towed to start? Such as if the batteries are not at full capacity?

I have a very early model 1100 without multi power. The parts book shows several configurations of dash some with the multi power lever some without. The Massey transmission has all hydraulic clutches so It's my guess that without the engine running there would be no way to get up hydraulic pressure to engage clutch.

Nope, Multipower tranny wont allow it.

I was reading this post and was curious... Since I now have a MF 1085... why can you NOT pull start a tractor with Multipower tranny???

Thanks,

The reason a tractor with multi-power can't be pull started is due to how the multi-power is set up.

When the multi-power is in the "high" position, a hydraulic clutch is engaged to put the transmission in a slightly higher gear. When the lever is moved to the "low" position, the clutch is released, and a sprag unit kicks in.

The sprag unit lets the wheels turn faster than the tractor, but will NOT let them turn slower. that's why you don't have engine braking when you go downhill in low multi-power.

Think of the sprag unit as a ratchet - When you're turning a bolt wth a ratchet, the bolt HAS to turn at least as fast as the ratchet. But if you could somehow get ahold of the bolt and spin it faster, the ratchet will not hold it back.

When the engine is not running, you don't have hydraulic pressure to kick the clutch in and engage the "high" side of the multi-power. Pulling the tractor will NOT turn the hydraulic pump. So you never get hydraulic pressure to kick in the high multi-power.

Hope that makes sense...

Thank you for the explanation. I now understand how the tranny works on my tractor a little better. This is the first MF that I have owned, but it seems to be a good tractor. But I am not crazy about the Free wheeling when the multi-power is in low. I have not found many reasons to run the tractor in low.

Thanks again,
MC

I think it may depend on what transmission it has. I know a multi-power tranny can't be pull started and don't think a power shift can be. If it has just a standard tranny then it should be able to be pull started. Dave

I have never seen an 1100 with anything but a multi-power transmission.

Our current & previous MF 1100s had Multi-power. I understand why now we never pulled to start them.
