Hey Folks,

I've seen this question posed dozens of times, but I think I may have a different problem than the usual suspect-worn engine. When it drops below 50 degrees, my 175 takes several minutes to crank. It has around 2400 hours on it, and everything, including the tin, works perfectly. Does not consume excessive oil and seems to have alot of power. My older, tired 135 cranks immediately in all weather. The 175 will fire up immediatly anytime the weather is above 50 or anytime it has been run the same day that it is cold. Just before it finally cranks on cold mornings, it seems to try to run on one or two cylinders for 15-20 seconds. Could this be a bad injector (s) or timing issue with the pump? I'm hoping I dont have to rebuild, it was purchased from an elderly man who is well known around here for taking great care and pride in his equipment. Thanks in advance any help.

Know what you're saying, I got a 180 its a great tractor, had it for 30 yrs and it's the same thing below 50 deg. and you crank and crank without a little either ( big on the little ) on the flip side I got 354's in tractors and combine that start good in cold weather. I think it's just the nature of that engine to start hard below 50 deg.

You could try loosening off one of the injector supply lines to se if there is any fuel present when first trying to start if nothing then fuel is leaking back.Installing a Thermastart system is fairly simple and straight forward it would also cost less than a smoked starter or battery.

I would not use any whiffs of starting fluid on that Perkins. Check out the other things folks have told you; battery, cables, ground, thermostart, block heater. Better leave the ether sniffing to other brands of engines. Seen several at the local MF dealer with the pistons broken around the rings area because of the ether. Tom

One thing no one has said anything about is the battery cables those engine have to spin over good if it has the small cable that most auto parts houses sell that could be your problem. I found that was the problem on quite a few of them through years They need a good heavy cable and a good ground to start good.

Thanks to everyone for the input. It looks like it is just something I"ll have to deal with. It is usually very mild here in north Florida (we did see low 20"s this year, though), so I don"t think I"ll go to the trouble of adding a pre-heater to the manifold or a block heater. This may just be typical for this model Perkins with no pre-heater. I"ll keep the battery fully charged and be a little more patient. Other than this issue, it really is a great tractor. For the $4300 purchase price, I think I can deal with slow starting two months a year.

Hello,
It has been mentioned below but no-one has suggested checking the thermostart if you have one fitted. On the inlet manifold you may see a small bore pipe and cable going to a fitting which is screwed into the manifold. If you have a voltmeter check that current is flowing when you turn the key to 'Heat' or 'Heat Start' position.
If not, connect a 12V bulb to test. With the key applied you will feel the thermostart and surrounding area warming if it is working. As a final check, remove the pipe (small fuel loss is normal) and remove the thermostart. If it is wet and the inside of the manifold appears to be wet, then that suggests a faulty thermostart.

Hi JB, Seems like it should start better-spent time w/
them since new. Did you not have a pre-heater on
the intake manifold or does it not work? If that
was working it would help greatly. That is controlled by turning your key backwards for 15
seconds or so-then engage starter. Some missing
is normal when first started. Good luck, Chuck

My uncles have a 175 diesel bought it with 10 hours on the meter. Has over 7000 on it last I knew. Has been hard starting below 50 degrees since the day they got it. Even with dual block heaters. Sometimes it still needs a boost from an extra battery and a snort of either. Great tractor other then that.

Does it have an engine block/hose heater? If not, why not add one and fool the tractor into thinking the weather's warm.

Mine starts hard when cold too. But it has over 6000 hrs with no rebuild work at all. It definitely needs head work (oil getting past valve stem seals).

Ours never was the best cold weather starter.

Are you sure that it is cranking over good and fast? Maybe try with some extra batteries hooked up. Starter OK?

Then you could check the compression. If that checks out then IP and injector work would be next on my list.

Good Day,
JP.
